Hmmm going up against COex on that route (EWR-YHZ) except XJT uses the erj-145.

Does anyone know exactly when the US CBP pre-clearance opens in YHZ? I know it currently is not. That is good news for pax travelling from YHZ.

Should US CBP open more pre-clearance facilities in Canada? where?
[yes, in YHM, YQB at least. And perhaps YXU as it has a larger population than YHZ.]

Should US CBP open pre-clearance facilities oversears? where?
[Mexico, GRU, LHR/LGW.... Any overseas airport that generates more US-bound traffic than YHZ.]

Except for YQB, do any of those even have transborder service? Of the airports in Canada that don't have preclearance, if they do decide to open another facility, it's almost certainly going to be out west, YXE or YQR in my opinion.

It is a new airport pair for AA, but not a new market. American Eagle already flies JFK-YHZ twice a daily.

There is a difference there. CO mainly uses that route for connections through their Newark hub while AA will be using the route for O&D into New York City

It will open before these flights start

YHM would likely get transborder flights if it had preclearance. This is a chicken and egg thing.

BTW, several smaller airports in Canada (Kitchener, Fredericton, Thunder Bay, London, etc.) do get transborder service and don't have preclearance

Prior to Hurricane Wilma, plans were underway to do a test program at CUN, which may still happen now that the area has pretty much fully recovered.

I was under the impression that American connected a large number of its YHZ, YUL and YYZ passengers onwards to the Caribbean.

This new LGA flight might be more for O/D. American also flew YHZ-BOS only a few years back.

Shannon and Dublin, to my surprise, offer Customs Pre-Clearance facilities. Based on that fact, I could see it being offered from a few other destinations in Europe. The only problem being... no more duty free on the plane!

At JFK, perhaps. LGA's FIS is too small to handle mainline flights, so non-precleared or SJU Carribean flights are a no go.

Perhaps, but the route is now covered by Comair and Air Canada Jazz

LGA will be for O&D and some domestic connections to major markets like DFW, ORD, MIA, etc., plus maybe DCA, RDU, etc. JFK is, indeed, used for connections -- largely to the Caribbean. The morning YUL- and YHZ-JFK flights are perfectly timed for Caribbean connections, and the afternoon/early evening YUL-, YYZ- and YHZ-JFK flights are perfectly timed for European connections.

Not to mention that SJU and most of the Caribbean are outside of LGA's operating perimeter (except Saturdays), and that American doesn't serve the region from LGA.

YHM would likely get transborder flights if it had preclearance. This is a chicken and egg thing.

YHM already has seasonal transborder service to Florida. US Border Protection aren't going waste resources to set up US Pre-clearance at an airport with less than 200,000 transborder pax a year. Like ya said above, other small airports have US hub flights without pre-clearance. Being so close to BUF and even closer to YYZ is what hinders YHM from re-establishing a transborder link into a hub. YKF on the other hand, even though it's close to YHM, is far enough away from BUF for NW to have taken notice.

While I doubt we'll see any new US Pre-clearance facilities in Canada for at least a decade, YQB or YYJ would be the next logical places, but both of those airports will have to nearly double their transborder numbers before getting considered.

Two years ago my fiancee and I flew AA JFK-YUL on a ERJ-140 (or is 144) and YUL-JFK on a ERJ-135, on the flight back I notice that of the 35 or so people on the flight only about four had JFK as our final destination (including myself and my fiancee). The rest were connecting to St.Maarten, Aruba and a couple other Caribbean destinations.

CO also flies a daily 737-500 between EWR and YHZ, 3 ERJ-145s, 1 737-500.

It's one of the highest connecting markets I've noticed on Eagle out of JFK.

From what I have seen, there are a lot of conx to Europe, the Islands, and the transcons.

The flight we took from Montreal back to JFK was a early flight (very early), it seemed timed so that they could connect to AA's large morning Caribbean departure bank. Like I posted it was mostly Canadians heading for the Caribbean, only a handfull of us were not connecting.
