A380 Formation Flight Above TLS

Wed Aug 30, 2006 6:08 pm

I know some of the nutters would say that they are tired of seeing a new thread about A380, but 5 minutes ago, the 4 tests aircraft A380 MSN 001, MSN 002, MSN 004 & MSN 009 just did a formation fly-by above the TLS aiport here at 11.00 AM.

Can you imagine the noise of those four beasts just flying over?

We can hope for some pictures soon.
No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

I was driving southerly towards Toulouse airport around 9:45 this morning and just as I was approaching Aéroconstellation saw one take off, then when parallel with Aéroconstellation saw a second one, then as I took the exit (for E Leclerc) I saw the third one and as I took the back road down towards the airport (near carpark P5) saw the fourth one on take off roll in front of me. What a site! Amazingly I managed not to crash the car while looking at these beasts take to the sky! What a site.

Great post Knoxibus and thanks for the photo Jonathan-I!!! Big grin

So... how was the noise of 16 Trent 900s? (i've not checked so I'm guessing they were all Trent powered!)

Cheers!

Just out of curiosity can anyone spot which A380 is equipped with EA engines?

Great Picture!! I always wanted a picture like that.... just amazing!!! It won't be something common to see 4 A380s in the air at the same time in formation, so that picture is worth a lot!!! Thanks for sharing... I just wish there were more pictures and a video of it as well... please post the pictures if you have any!

Imagine the wake turbulence

Wake turbulence is minimal when the plane is clean (gear and flaps) and going faster than Vref or so. What really causes wake turbulence is full flaps and low speeds. As gh123 mentioned, if there was any wake turbulence, it would travel down and outward from the wingtips, so there would be no issue even if they were in slow dirty flight in formation.

WOW. That is stunning indeed!!!! It’s wonderful to see them all flying about! It must have been a sight/sound to behold.

Looking forward to flying in one in the future.

I am relatively new here, and I've read the hotly contested forums regarding A380 and Boeing. And although some may be partial to the Boeings, one can't help but appreciate and be mesmerized at such a stunning display. The curiosity to experience what it is like to fly in one for me, is quite strong. Good luck during it's launch.

Amazing shot! I love it!! I was just thinking -- if these babies were loaded to capacity (550 pax each) we'd be looking at over 2,200 souls flying in formation That's a LOT of people!

PS - AUSSIEINDC, I loved the "pod of Whales" comment too... perfect.

This is why open sources of information (i.e. A.net, Wiki, etc.) should always be taken with a grain of salt. The above information is incorrect, and is taught to even private pilots.

Wake turbulence is greatest when CLEAN, HEAVY, and SLOW. It is impossible to determine two of the conditions from the photos, so the amount wake relative to what it might have been is anybody's guess.

Ouch!

You're right. Now that I look at it again, I don't know what I was thinking. As you said, I learned that in private training and again in commercial training etc etc.

They are clean, who knows how fast, but they are probably not heavy. Either way, it doesn't matter as long as they are at the same altitude.

the pictures remind me of a formation of B-52 bombers, with their huge wings. I didn't see this similarity earlier with the A-380, am I the only one?

I thought so too, but the slats appear to be out in a few of the photos. Pictures can be very deceptive. I suspect there is likely some vertical stagger to the formation.

One humble learning experience came for me during a formation takeoff. I ended up getting caught in the other planes wake and it induced a bank which took me to the other side of the plane, despite corrective action. It's a good thing we weren't a flight of three!

I hope Airbus not only took a lot of photos for information purposes but closely documented the weights of all four aircraft and their positions in the formation. There are many ways to cut wake vortices; the question is how successful were airbus' attempts. Note: I'm pro-A380. But I'm also a scientist; show me the numbers!  spin

Do you have something personal with WINGS? I always seem to find see some funny discussions going back and forth between you two.. anyways, I believe that WINGS mentioned the incident, because the Aicraft that had the "sensor mishap" (and had to cancel its flight to Tunisia), is actually one of the ones flying in this formation the very next day...
