Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:23 am

I read about the trial runs for the new airport in BKK and was still wondering if the airport will open in late September ?

Thanks!

All news sources here in Bangkok are still talking as if the airport will open on the 28th of September, with some domestic flying to be moved over on the 15th.

I think they are having a soft opening on 15 sept with some LCCs.
I just booked a Jetstar flight SIN-BKK, and the following text box popped up prior to confirming booking...

"Please note that Jetstar will be operating out of the new Bangkok Terminal - Suvarnabhumi International Airport from 15 Sep 2006 onwards."

As far as I know, they are still going to open it on the 28. Some my friends at TG are saying that they are really set on this date, so it sounds like its a go.

Quote:
Immigration ready for airport opening

(TNA) - The Immigration Bureau is ready for Suvarnabhumi International Airport’s commercial opening on September 28.

Immigration Bureau Chief Pol.Lt. Gen. Suwat Thamrongsrisakul said officers have been trained and assigned to 124 checkpoints in the arrival section of the passenger terminal and 72 in the departure section.

All immigration officers have undergone English language training sessions.

Data has shown that it should take the average passenger 20 seconds to pass immigration, although in some cases it may take a bit longer if there are questions.

Gen. Suwat said airlines have been requested to submit passenger data ahead of an aircraft’s arrival in order to quicken immigration procedures, in particular for large tour groups. This kind of arrangement is currently in use in many other countries.

From this article in the Bangkok Post.

That is good news. Do you when international airlines such as QR or EK will move to the new airport?

Last time I heard they all needed to move on the 28th. I'm in the United States now so I don't have any inside info now.

I'll be flying LHR-AUH-BKK on the 11th November and arriving the 12th November. Will be nice to experience a new airport.

I've already vistited Suvarnabhumi for a look and it looks very nice. There are also 3 trip reports on the test flights from BKK-NBK here. They give a nice idea about what it will be like to travel through Suvarnabhumi.

Thanks for the info!

Nice to know that it will finally open! It looks very nice and great to see that they will have an observation deck as well.

Take Care

So, I visited BKK last month, and was fascinated to see a golf course in the middle of the airport. No fences or nets separating our taxiing plane from the guys hitting balls right next to us. Isn't that just asking for trouble? Is it a public course?

And, more importantly, does the golf course move to the new airport, too?  Smile

Oh yes, it is beautiful but somehow it reminds a bit of KUL. Really love these
traditional Thai Engravings in the sliding doors. It will be really quiet inside. The cargo terminal makes a good those impression too. Due to the size it is anticipated to be very quiet inside. DM's T1 is like a zoo, especially before midnight. Actually, I am looking forward to the new airport, although there are lots of great memories of the good old Don Muang, which happens to be the oldest operating airport in Asia (has anyone seen these pictures of Elephants pulling the Caravelle's to their parking positions?)

Private RTAF members only Course.

You have to be in the Thai Air Force to play on the course.

Don Muang will remain open on the Air Force Side and the Course will still be
open.

I think they add a nice Orient Thai touch to this modern airport.

It was absolutly a mess. Took forever for the pre-checkin bag screening.

I used to have a picture like that. I don't think it was Don Maung though, more like Phuket, Krabi, or Hat Yai.
