Another US Merger Rumor

Thu Aug 31, 2006 4:05 am

Ok I heard this rumor a while ago and think it is 100% not going to happen but I just thought it would be fun to talk about.

Someone told me that British Airways was planning on buying out US Airways. I asked if he was joking but he said it was true.

I dont even know if a foreign company could even buy out US but I think thats ridiculous. Any way lets just say it did happen what do you guys think would happen.

Let's put it this way: If BA bought US, there would be no more squabbles over Virgin America.

As far as I know, it's just impossible thanks to the law in the US. Virgin America comes to mind regarding this restriction.

Foreign companies can't have the control of a US airline.
They can have up to 40% of the stock IIRC, and can't have certain positions in the board of directors.

Now next ridiculous thread please.

You're caught in a time warp. BA wanted to "buy" US Airways in 1993 - the original deal had to be scaled back significantly because of the "control" issues and laws about 25% stakes (as mentioned above).

I believe the original investment from BA was going to be something like $750 million in US. Finally, it was scaled back considerably so a codeshare deal could be made between the two, and after 1994 (a terrible year for US with the Charlotte and Pittsburgh crashes), BA bailed and hitched up with AA. The relationship between US and BA was never very good - BA treated US like its "red-headed" step-child.

In the early 1990s, British Airways invested in US Air, and the two had a strong relationship. There were 2 US 767s that were painted in BA colors:

but were operated by US.

Shortly after US Air re branded itself as US Airways in 1996, the "alliance"/partnership and relationship with BA ended. In 1998; BA, AA, CP, CX and QF announced oneworld.

Maybe that someone is stuck in the early 1990s?

Matt

P.S.: Last year, oneworld was the only alliance whose members earned a combined profit ($1.5 billion). Star's members lost $2.2 billion and an overall deficit in SkyTeam of over $7 billion. (source is wikipedia: oneworld http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oneworld ).

If it were at all possible for Foreign carriers to merge or acquire US carriers BA and AA would have merged a long time ago, same with UAL and LH.

It all happened in the past and this photo and caption is proof!

But it all came to an end abruptly; although I believe BA managed to steel USAir's routes into LGW at the end of it though?

US was absent from LGW for a year or two after this saga and eventually came back at a later date with different routes.

You all laugh and joke about it but I read a good article in Forbes a few months ago and the theme was basically 'British airline companies are the only things that can save the US airline industry.'

As always, your comments please.

From memory, BA WERE planning on buying control of US Airways (late 1980s / early 1990s), that is until things got complicated, and they backed out of their arrangements with US in favour of an alliance with AA. This is very old news, if I am not mistaken.

So all things rediculous aside, how would a BA/US merger affect these routes:

PHL-LHR
JFK-LHR
CLT-LHR

Would we see increased frequencies/fleet upgrades at either place, or a decrease in either?

After the mid-term elections, Bush is going to put forth rules to relax foreign ownership of airlines. This was suppose to have been done before as part of the USA-EU open skies deal, but fell through on the American side due political pressures. Now its on hold until after the elections.

Also I believe one Senator managed to push through some rules requiring the DOT to wait one year before they would issue executive rules doing the same thing.

However, if Bush gets his way, and legislation is passed by Congress, then the fight VX would be moot.

My wife worked with a French scientist on temp. assignment in the US. Hearing that my wife was going to get her car washed, the visitor said, "Zut, why would you do that? It's a machine."

This thinking goes along with the so-called "French maintenance" theory: run it 'til it stops and then do a major overhaul. In some cases, the French way, as opposed to phased or preventive maintenance, is the better choice.

Maybe I mis-asked my question. I was specifically asking about Trans-atlantic routes that BA or US would be picking up/adding/dropping, etc since they both fly trans-a and specifically JFK-LHR is a flagship route.

I would imagine that intra-USA flights such as PHX-SFO, LAS-SEA, DCA-BOS (earlier mentioned) wouldn't be impacted nearly as much since BA and US have little to no overlap on each other's territory.

So...how would trans-atlantic frequencies and locations be affected by a BA and US merger?
