Why aren't there any pictures of approaches to CZM? Mexicana used to fly their 727 there, and that would look great landing at CZM. How low do the jets go? I'm assuming not as low as SXM, but judging from the pic, CZM is the closet thing to SXM I've seen. What planes fly to CZM these days? And Is that a public beach on the end too?

I'm sure Frontier, Sun Country, and US also fly there. Unfortunately Cancun stills the show.

I'm not sure but I think the planes land lower at ACE then they do at CZM.

I've been to both SXM and ACE and the planes definitely land lower at SXM. Can't think of any were else were they land so low, except for maybe JSI.

Unfortunately?! Whadda ya mean unfortunately? Viva Cancun!

Quite honestly, though, If CZM grew to the size of CUN, it would completely ruin what CZM has going for it, the privacy. As long as CZM stays small, it's doing what it should be doing.

Frontier has Saturday service DEN-CZM until November 17:

Then it becomes 3 x weekly - Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday - all with A319.

In your photo of the runway 11 approach at CZM, the runway looks much closer to the beach then it is. I would guess aircraft cross that beach no lower than 500 feet. This is the case with MANY airports near water, perimeter roads, etc. What makes SXM unique is often, aircraft cross the beach at less than 100 feet. I know of few airports where heavies cross the threshold this low. The threshold is essentially on the beach at SXM, whereas at CZM, it looks like about .25 miles to the displaced threshold. Still, neat to watch approaches from any beach.

It is absolutely a shame that Aerocaribe (now Click Mexicana) have stopped flying the air shuttle CUN-CZM. During a time they had up to 10 flights a day on each way and it was exciting to enjoy the slow and low approaches to runway 11.

For those who visit the area, go to Playa del Carmen's airstrip (the town on mainland from which the ferry boats depart to Cozumel) and pay the little extra for the air ride to Cozumel. AeroSaab offers the service during day time, the flight is a bit shorter than 10 minutes (another record for you) and the experience and sightseeing are absolutely glorious.

These are some of the carriers that operate in CZM:

AeroMexico (charter flights)
American
Continental
Frontier
Mexicana/Click Mexicana
Northwest
Sun Country
USAirways

That house you see at the end/beginning of the runway belongs to the President of Mexico, I believe. His wife usually spends time there and there is a gunboat offshore to keep things sweet. I also think that there is an air force base on the left hand side of the picture. So taking pics or loitering at the end of this runway may be problematic?

I was just in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. the airstrip in Playa was pretty funny looking. the road that we drove on went right past it. One airline had 4 what i thought were LET 410's. 2 were seriously missing parts and damaged on one side of the road, and the other two looked ok on the other side of the road where the runway was. There were a jumble of messed up planes and flyable planes also.

First Choice fly there with B767-300's, fortnightly from Manchester (from Gatwick next summer).

Judging by that picture at the top, I'm sure there are many airports with lower or similar approaches over a beach, especially given that Cozumel has a displaced threshold, so aircraft will approach higher than at say, SXM, where there isn't one.

Reason for the displaced threshold are the large and very tall cruise ships in the bay. I wonder what kind of special design do they have according to the criteria of ICAO's PANS OPS or FAA's TERPS.
