Last DL 732 Flight About To Land At ATL

Sat Sep 02, 2006 1:21 am

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL910

Looks like there's about ten minutes left. The other four 732's are on their way to KVCV right now.

OKC-ATL as flight 910 appears to be the last DL 732 flight.

Long live the 732 and thanks for the many years of service!

I didn't know they were going to be retired so soon/quickly  frown  Up until a few weeks ago, they were a regular visitor at TPA, usually coming in from CVG. The DL 732 will be missed  crying

There are currently four 732's on their way to Victorville...

Those 732s are awsome. I had the oppertunity to fly one of HP's last one's back in August of 2004.

Do we have the ship number?

That was the ship on the OKC-ATL flight.

And there goes yet another classic from Delta's fleet, joining the sides of previously retired 727s and L-1011s at VCV. Oh well, let's see the positive side, no more fuel guzzlers, less required maintenance, and a simplified fleet.

I am glad I got to shoot the one I did. It was quite an adventure and involved the police and Air Force police, or whatver they are called. I also stepped on a nail.

These birds will get another life in a Latin American or African carrier for their domestic operations. The spirit of the 732 lives on with the 737-700s WN flies every day and the 738s that DL now flies and the eventual 739s CO is adding to their fleet. The old cigar shaped P&W engines gave way to more modern and quieter GE versions, not to mention fuel efficiency being the least of their virtues comparatively speaking.

Wow!!! I didn't know that these were being retired now! I just flew on a DL 737-200 serving Flight 1500 from KATL to KLEX on Sunday, August 27th. If I had known that it would be my last DL732 flight, I would have taken a vomit bag or safety card!! Darn!  hissyfit

Almost got the chance to fly one of these birds during the Comair Christmas Computer Crash of 2004. Unfortunately, the plane was full (my bags enjoyed the ride tho!) and I ended up on a NW DC-9 instead.

What is the -200 being replaced with?

Mostly 738s, and what Mad Dogs DL continues to use. There are rumors that DL might place an order for some EMB-190/195s upon exit from Chapter 11 early next year to be an equipment airframe between the regional connection carriers and mainline, and it is specified in the re-negotiated pilot contract.

I doubt you will see any 190/195s at Delta. More likely they will take a few more 738s, add some 73Gs and a few used MD-88s. Beyond that, they will hold off on ordering any new narrowbody until Boeing is ready to jump in with their next offering.

Gee! How are all those DL pilots going to get out of VCV? Are they all going to get on a shuttle bus and head down to ONT to pick up a flight back to SLC to get back to their base(s)?

yep, they will be driven over to ONT, then deadhead back to their respective bases. I think Delta goes direct from ONT to ATL and CVG.

Which is why it is only a rumor. DL IS definitely getting some used AA/TWA ETOPs 752s that have been discussed on other threads however, and they do have some options and rolling options for more 738s which I'm certain they will firm-up as they prepare to depart Chapter 11 during 1st qtr 2007. Many of these current routes will be flown by CRJs until that time, probably on greater frequencies.
What routes do you think DL should upgrade to 738, MD-88 or MD-90 service when mainline a/c becomes available?
From SLC:
SLC-YYC: 2x 738 or MD-90 (remaining 2x can stay a CRJ-7)
SLC-YEG: 2x 738 or MD-90
SLC-YVR: 3x 738 or MD-90
SLC-SEA: 2x 738 or 752 (To replace current CRJ frequencies. SEA is the #5 O&D market from SLC)
SLC-PHX: All frequencies should be mainline
SLC-LAS: All frequencies should be mainline
SLC-LAX: All frequencies should be mainline
SLC-DEN: All frequencies should be mainline
The above are the 1-4 rankings for O&D from SLC.

I wonder if all of them have cockpit qualified on a 738 or a 752? I'll have to check the schedule, but DL likely does ATL and CVG 1x per day from ONT, but SLC has multiple flights naturally being the regional hub for them.

Didn't DL get some of the last 732's that rolled off the assembly line? I recall them showing up at DFW pre-WA merger and they were brand new. Nice birds. I've been on them many times.

I do believe you're correct. I think the newest one dates to 1989, and all of the 733s they received via the merger with Western in 1987. When they retired those earlier this year that was the last vestiges of Western Airlines in DL's fleet. They even had the "WA" in the registration.

there are always 88 and 90 personnel seeking training on the 738 and 752. They pay more, have better trips, and the Boeings are much more pilot friendly aircraft.

Doesn't mean a thing as far as the 88/90s staying or Delta seeking some more. The leases on the 88s are very, very cheap now. If Delta can pick up a few more at a good lease rate to help fill in until new aircraft arrive, they will.

On the same topic, Delta just announced the recall of a further 65 pilots and there is an aircraft bid coming out in Sept. So some pilots will move off the 88/90, but others will move onto them.

They need these to "right-size" the equipment on their SLC & West Coast to Hawaii (OGG & KOA mostly--HNL will likely remain 764). But also some of their smaller Europe flights from NYC-JFK (ATL is just beyond their effective range).

That said, I'm sure if I asked this same 752 captain, he would chomp at the bit to move up to a 763/764. You're right the Boeings are MUCH more pilot friendly than the "Mad Dogs." I'm certain the 732 personnel who saw their airframes retired today will likely move over to the 738, since it is very similar. Some might get a shot at 752 training. I guess the longer they've been with the company, and/or the better their annual evaluations will determine such priorities for said personnel.

Didn't realize they were retiring the 737-200 this soon. Sad to see them go. Were they doing anything special for the last flight, like commemorative final flight certificates, as they did with the 727 & L-1011s?

The Connection Carriers; SkyWest, ASA & Comair do have many given numbers of furloughed DL pilots. And if I recall correctly, hiring laid-off DL pilots is a priority for them.

The engines are considerably different on the 800 from the old 200, so I don't think any of the captains or 1st officers (unless they were cross-trained which is a good assumption there were some) for the 732 were paired with the 738. The F/A's crew on many airframes. Suzi (A DL F/A friend of mine) told me she does 738s, 752s and some MD-90s (she has 21 years at DL). But like the pilots, seniority rules and the most senior F/A's get all the glory on the 763s, 764s and 772s.

Not that I doubt you but I've never read anything official from Delta, AA, or Boeing on this....

Care to share a link for me?

DL CEO Jerry Grinstien made it known last June or July over an intranet pod-cast to DL employees that they are definitely getting 10 former TWA/AA 752s next year when leases with AA expire and they really would like to get more since they need ETOPs certified 752's to go from SLC, SAN, LAX and SFO to HNL (764's mostly from SLC & LAX) OGG and KOA. Also many of the Europe routes need to be "right-sized" so far as equipment usage goes, and these 752's represent the "shoe that fits." The 752 is also being used for some Latin America flights, another market DL is building up.
In all, the 738 and 752 are now the backbone of DL's narrow-bodied fleet. The retirement of the 732 and 733 classics represent what DL wants to part with under this restructuring. They are after all the least efficient narrow-bodied and oldest in DL's fleet (similar to what the 762 was in their wide-bodied fleet). If DL gets all 19 soon to be former AA/TWA 752s, that will give them 140 total in their fleet. The largest 752 fleet on any carrier id my numbers are correct.

Sad to see the little buckets go! Had many a flight b/w EWR-CVG and back on them over the last few years!

Great little birds.

I doubt you will see any 190/195s at Delta. More likely they will take a few more 738s, add some 73Gs and a few used MD-88s. Beyond that, they will hold off on ordering any new narrowbody until Boeing is ready to jump in with their next offering.

With the 732s retired, DL now has a huge capacity gap in their fleet. With the largest DL Connection a/c currently in the fleet having 70 seats (CRJ-700, CRJ-900 [Version delivered to OO seats 70 in a two class configuration], and E-170) and the smallest mainline a/c being the MD-88, which has 143 seats. To me, the E-190/195 would make a lot of sense; the reality is that they probably go for an a/c whose entry into the mainline fleet would be smoother. Since the MD-87 shares the same type rating as the MD-88, that could be a possibilty, but how many 87s are available on the market? Perhaps DL brings in the two smaller members of the 737NG family since they all share a type rating with the 738?

Common problem - now both AA and DL have a huge gap between their CRJ700/CRJ705 (and EMB170 for DL) and their MD80a/c....

Also - DL's MD88s have 142 seats not 143.
