Great Spotting Lunch At SLC!

Sat Sep 02, 2006 4:16 am

As I often do, I got some quick food and sat at the Golf Course at the south end of SLC for a spotting lunch and to enjoy the weather while it lasts. It was definitely worth it!

Various bizjets, DL 763's, etc taking off from 16L, so right over my head! However, in a 5-minute span a Kallitta (sp?) 742 took off, a "ConAir" MD-80 landed as well as an Allegiant MD-80. The Allegiant one in particular caught my eye. They landing on 17 and parked over in the General Aviation ramp. Any idea what brought them here? Charter I assume.

And the Kalitta 742, it banked out over towards the west. Any idea where it's heading/why it was here? It's the first time I've ever seen a 747 in SLC. In SEA it's a common sight, but in SLC it's quite rare!  Smile

Better yet, go play! I had a six hour sit between flights once in SLC, so my wife and I went to the course, rented clubs and played 18. Nice day, nice course, loved watching the planes landing.

Hey that's two over a 2 day span! Keep in mind AF1was here with "W" and his visit. SEA might get 1 or two a day, but if you're up there and have the time for a three hour drive north across the border, try YVR, they get them by the sky-load full!
SLC will likely not see many 747s, but an increasing number of 772s over the next few years can't be ruled out.

That's true SLCUT2777, I even mentioned that to my friend I was sitting with.

So do you have any idea of the destination of the Kalitta 742? Or any idea why an Allegiant MD-80 is sitting at the General Av ramp?

How often do the DOJ/ConAir flights come and go? That's the 2nd one I've seen around noon in the last few weeks. (I only go out there once or two a week for lunch. So to see it twice in only 4 or so visits would make it a pretty common visitor?)

Is this is? Heading east, though.

SEA gets the BA 744, the EVA 744-Combi regularly. I've also seen Asiana and Korean 747s in SEA sub-ing for their 772s.

A few years ago we used to have a lot of NW 742s and DC-10s, though those are mainly replaced with the A332/A333s now. United still has a few 777s for the SEA-NRT route. The only other regular international widebody I can think of is the SAS A343.

Domestically we get the DL and Hawaiian 767s.

Oh I miss SEA.. so much more variety then the Skywest CRJ farm that SLC has become.  Wink

Yep. That must be it. It did bank out to the west from 16L, must've headed north and then back east.

Here's the Allegiant one. Flt 4015. Not a regular flight, so it must be a charter...

Don't forget regularly scheduled 744Fs from Cargolux, China Cargo, and Korean, as well as occassional visits from Atlas.

what brings you to the conclusion there might be an increasing number of 772s in the near future? From what carrier, and where should they go? just courious...

Delta's SLC-Europe flights that people say are going to start in 2007?

This is true. But the cargo ramp is out of sight out of mind.

But if we're going to include the Freight Dogs, then SLC also get's FedEx DC-10's/MD-11's, UPS 767s, and the occasional DHL DC-8.  Wink

I'll be surprised to see this happen, to say the least. I think it will be a LOOOONG time before SLC gets any 777s. I think there MAY be a slim chance of SLC-LGW/CDG/FRA flight(s), but my money is on DL 763s for that.

How about this. The day a 772 is scheduled to run regularly in/out of SLC, I'll buy you a beer!  drunk

Either 772's or if DL gets its finances in order, perhaps an order of 787's?

Ugh, no kidding, and I thought KHIF was borign with just F-16's, BUT, the last few weeks several rarebirds have popped in, such as a CO 753 and a DL MD_90 on a diversion the other night.

They could possibly be from ANY SkyTeam allied airline, but more than likely DL/AF would bring them here, from CDG, but, as I stated above, DL might order 787's and put THEM on the SLC-Europe flights.

If SLC gets any service outside North America (Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean) it will be to Europe most likely on DL to CDG or LGW in the next few years, a 772 could be used on one of those flights, but more than likely a 763 for starters. Also keep in mind SkyTeam carriers AF & KLM have looked at service from CDG or AMS into SLC, and they would more than likely use a 772ER just looking at what they have in their fleets. At the very best I only see 2-3 day service a week from any of the big Europe hubs to SLC anytime soon.

KL, could also possibly use their A330-200's here as well...KE could send over a 772/3, I guess...

I would love getting an AF flight from CDG to SLC as much as I would hate this flight being operated by DL (as my company buys my tickets for travelling between SLC and Germany - they would go for the quickest way. So far I always could convince them giving me an AF or DL operated by AF ticket... I definitely prefer AF's longhaul eco product over DLs, especially on DL's 763s).

However, I would guess regardless if DL or AF/KL are starting service to Europe, they will use their smallest longhaul plane to start with - this being the 763 for DL and the 330 for AF/KL. Remember, DL has a shortage of 777s, so from winter CDG won't even get a DL 777 from ATL any more - everything going down to 763 and 764....

Actually to entertain such a venture in the first place on the part of SLC, a longer runway (15,000') is required during the hot summer months SLC can experience. 12,000' just isn't enough to even get a fully fueled and laden 763 off let alone an A330/332 or a 772ER for that matter.
DL is in the process so I'm told of firming up with Boeing an order for some additional 772s, including some LRs! (to cover ATL-JNB no doubt), so this here is also part of the speculation about DL having some 772 service into SLC.

Sorry, that post doesn't sound very nice, and it's too late to edit.  Sad

Shall I rephrase: We have a few very knowledgeable members there who know absolute loads about SLC, but don't have A.net accounts.

Better?  Smile
