SQ11 Load Factor

Has anyone flown on SQ11 NRT-SIN sector?

While I'm sure LAX-NRT is a high yield run, I can't imagine NRT-SIN been full and high yield, the problem comes from the arrival time at SIN, 1 am, missing pretty much all flights to Europe and Australia/NZ, the only viable connection is SQ478 to JNB, plus another non SQ flight to DXB (I think it's EK).

Has SQ thought of either

1. moving the schedule up by 2 hours, which would enable a lot of connections to Europe and Australia/NZ.

or

2. Moving the schedule down to 3 hours, making it the last flight out of NRT like 10-10:30 pm, it would become a red eye (getting to SIN around 5 pm). At LAX, later departure would also mean more/better connections from other parts of US.

I know the first option isn't very feasible, since you'll also have to move up the schedule on SQ12 as the turnaround time at LAX is pretty tight. But second option can work out very well since SQ12 can depart after 12pm from SIN.

Would high-yield traffic between Japan and Europe or Australia fly down to Singapore first? I believe both QF and JL don't even offer a First cabin on their flights between Tokyo and Sydney.

Do you really think people would fly LAX-NRT-SIN-Europe ? I guess they would fly more likely LAX-Europe directly. Nearly the same for Australia. Ok one can say that the sector NRT-SIN-SYD would be allright.

Moving Narita operations times would be a near impossible task for SQ.

Due to the very limited slot availability SQ is pretty much tied into its currently held holdings which have been in use now for years.

The chances of being awarded a matching pair of arrival and departure slots for the times you propose would be quite a challenge unless SQ is willing to spend big bucks subleasing slots off another carrier.

I took this flight last night funnily enough. Economy class was almost full, only the odd empty seat, business class had some empty seats. It is a good flight if doing business in Tokyo. You can get in almost a full days work by taking the late flight. Arriving at 1am is a bit painful but we touched down at 1:05 and I was home at 1:45, an advantage of having efficient immigration.

That said leaving at 11pm would also be quite useful although I hate that 11:40pm flight from Singapore to Narita.

SIA has operated the flight for years, it works. They have 3 flights to NRT daily so the need for earlier times is already met.

Passengers can also connect to the early morning flights to CGK, BOM and KUL if they fly SQ11, although they have a connection time from 5 -8 hrs at Changi.

SQ operated this flight from early 80s and I have probably done it around 50 times, and except for the duration of SARS in 2003, I have never seen load factor below 90-80 %. So as the saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

No, I meant NRT-SIN and onward to Europe, Aust/NZ, and other parts of Asia. The LAX-NRT sector alone carries a lot of premium traffic and I know a huge chunk of the passengers get off at NRT.

I saw the departure right before curfew and thinking it'd be easier to move toward this time slot (a lot fewer flights between 9-10 pm than any other hours between 4-9 pm).

I know moving up the time is virtually impossible since it'll also affect operation of SQ12, plus TBIT at LAX is also slot constrained at around noon. Moving down the time looks more appealing, AF277 seems to be very popular out of NRT, but the late arrival for LAX-NRT may be an issue for business travellers.

SIA transpacific flights cross so many time zones and are 18 hours fly time to the US West Coast. They have improved the schedule as the intermediate stops have been eliminated with new airplanes. Honolulu had 2 or 3 SIA until 1990 because of the 744. Flight #1 and 2 is today Singapore-HKG-SFO-HKG-Singapore. When SIA started that flight with a DC-10 in 1978 or 79 it went Singapore-HKG-Guam-Honolulu-SFO and Vice versa. NOW its nonstop SFO-HKG on to Singapore. SIA's 744 and 777 are great

No airline would schedule a flight to arrive that close before the airport curfew. Especially a longhaul. It would be a nightmare if they have to operate behind schedule. It's not uncommon to be late 45 minutes due to enroute winds.
