Flights To KOA - Kona

Tue Sep 05, 2006 2:20 pm

I have an upcoming flight on United from KOA-LAX. It does not appear the flight is all that full. I have also read on a.net many times how the DL SLC-KOA route needs to be downsized. Are flights to KOA in general just not doing well? Are most people flying to HNL then connecting to the other islands on the Hawaiian airlines?

DL has/is dropping its SLC-KOA service. Makes a brief reappearance around the holidays again.

Assume you are headed to Kona in the next couple of months. Generally September until Thanksgiving is a somewhat quieter period.

On the contrary. There has been a significant fragmentation of flights to Hawaii with more direct services to the islands. Less and less people use HNL as a transfer point each year as reflected in the shrinking inter island market Aloha and Hawaiian are experiencing.

Any idea if it will return after that or is it done? Any opinion on why they could not make it work?

I personally live in ATL and could have choose DL for my flight (obviously), however I choose United because LAX seems like a much more appropriate stopping point for a flight to Hawaii. I felt it was the best way to breakup the long flight.

Note: I am going the first week of Oct.

UA 757s F and Y have monitors mounted on the celing down the center aisle. A feature film and short subject material will be shown. If she is looking for more, might I suggest a book/book on tape, portable DVD player or a nice book of Sudoku.

-Then you're all set. Hope your trip is great! I can't wait till I go back to KOA in March.
I'm assuming this is your first time? I won't spoil too much, but I have to tell you, the airport is awsome. Particularly the approach over the lava fields.

For now its gone for good, however several a.net posters claim it might return on a 757 at a later date.
I believe the failure was mostly to do with the fact that the aircraft assigned (767-400) was simply too much capacity for SLC-KOA even with the transfer traffic the SLC hub managed to foster.

Quite the opposite. KOA is doing great. Airlines keep adding routes and they keep filling. Our loads for US have constantly been over 90%. In short, it has been a great season and while it'll slow down for a while (US loads around 70%), the holiday season is already looking full.

Other airlines are experiencing the same. UA added a third daily LAX departure (only seasonal) and now we hear WestJest is on their way over.

The DL loads were great. However, they pulled the aircraft since they can make more money on their European routes. There are two scenarios going around now:

1. DL will return with one of their "new" ex-TW 752's

2. DL will return wiith SLC-OGG-KOA on a 764.

People have a tendancy to forget that DL was going great with cargo from KOA, too. DL will be back, it's just a matter of when. They are so sure of this, they haven't furloughed any workers (they have been taken in by other contracts until DL returns.)
