NW Emergency Landing, Pax Kept On Plane 10 Hours

Wed Sep 06, 2006 3:14 am

Flight 44 MSP-LGW made an emergency landing at DLH for smoke in cabin. No one was allowed off for ten hours. Interesting, looks like NW is at it again keeping people on their aircraft.

why did they need to keep pax on that flight for ten hours, i thought due to smoke in the cabin, you would evacuate everyone onboard?

Since it appears that only $50 travel vouchers were handed out they may have kept everyone on the plane to avoid having to spend time and money either putting these people in hotels or on another airline.

Unacceptable! Only one bad experience is enough to keep me off NW and that was 6 years ago.

I'm not bashing NW, as I'm a Elite with them. BUT, I did find it odd that the plane made and emergency landing for smoke in the cabin, and no evacuation was done. Instead it was just the opposite as NW made them wait for ten hours on a plane. You would think that NW has learned it's lesson time and time again. That airline really needs to get it's head out of it's arse sometimes.

I read the article and watched BOTH videos and clearly, NW bungled this one. If I were a passenger on that flight, I would be LIVID, and then to insult everyone by offering $50.00 travel vouchers for future flights of more than $200.00, is an outrage! Top it all off by lying to the media about not having any way to get people off of the plane when the video clearly shows the front door open and attached to a stairwell? Heads should roll!

I have a three-word suggestion to all those pax: "Class action lawsuit".

Keeping pax on a plane for 10 hours is obscene. I don't normally advocate suing people, but in this case I do.

That plane? If you're speaking of January 3, 1999, there were many many Northwest planes unable to get to a gate that day because the snow wasn't cleared away after a major snowstorm. I flew in on Delta that very day and we didn't have any trouble getting to the gate. I really don't remember who was at fault on that one. Northwest or DTW or both.

This is unacceptable, and the compensation was a joke. To me, as I noted about another recent trapping of pax on a mx delayed flight, the FAA should set a time limit, perhaps of 2-3 hours max of how long passangers must be kept on an aircraft before they have to be removed from and put into a terminal building, in a secure area, offered food, beverages and access to the bathroom. This is especially true when the weather is very warm or cool and would be a reasoned way to deal with such issues in a civilzed way.

Did NW not learn anything from what happened in Detroit back in '99?

They deserve what negative press comes out of this.

I wasn't aware that there was more than one. I didn't live in the DTW area at the time, but moved here shortly after that happened. I was living near STL and the only news we ever got was about TWA, which was in the St. Louis news a lot at that time.

I have no idea how the crew avoided a riot. And I would love for law enforcement to try and arrest someone should they try to leave....

I would call 911 on my cell phone. NWA may be in its last throes. They are a PR nightmare.

all i know is one of the employees should of just started the evac. Ten hrs yeah right more like ten minutes. I think every employee on that flight should be fired and be accountable themselves for any lawsuits that come from it. All airlines teach there crews repeatedly how to deal with crisis situations and not one employee did the right thing here. 10 hrs there is just now way that can be explained

Happened to me at STL with TW on an L1011, 8 hours, de-ice, runway, de-ice, engines off, meal served, trapped like rats with smell of other aircraft kersense invading the cabin, people got sick, back to gate after 8 hours, 1 hour, re board, 1 more hour, de-ice and flight in blizzard. The most ridiculous time i ever spent on an aircraft....

Maybe they were trying to have a barbeque. Smoked passengers mmmmm.

Seriously, what were they thinking? People are already nervous flying the US to UK sector, they have an emergency, and then hold these people for ten hours? I would think NW ops would have better procedures for dealing with problems like this. Their last fiasco got them dragged in front of Congress.

Great idea! Would make my flights up to EWR much more palatable. As it is, I never know when I get on the plane here in MIA whether we'll be sitting in the penalty box for yet another 2 hours due to a ground stop up in Newark.

One point to ponder, since this was an international flight does DLH have customs and immigrations services. Reminds me of the NW flight a few years ago flying from AMS to SEA got diverted to Moses Lake, and the passengers were stuck on the plane for eighteen hours..NW reasoning at that time was that Moses Lake didn't have any immigration services. (yea like they couldn't have a couple of officers jump in a car and drive from SEA or PDX.)

Ten hours....even when someone is arrested they get a chance to contact their attorney in less time. This is almost holding people against their will. Legally bordering on kidnapping.

Incompetent management, and improper procedures and accountability.

I'm not justifying what NW did in any way... but I fly into/out of DLH quite frequently, and there really isnt much room to handle a situation like this. Although it was likely uncomfortable, it probably seemed to be more comfortable to stay onboard than sitting practically on top of one another in the terminal. (I am, of course, disregarding the saftey concern of needing to evacuate as I don't know the specifics of passenger safety or imminent danger in this situation.)

Add this to the fact that the crew of that aircraft might have thought (as time progressed) that a solution was just around the corner.... ergo it didn't make sense to disembark.

AGAIN- I am not saying I agree with their choice, but I had to point this out since I thought of it...

Odd seeing how the flight status said it arrived back in MSP at like 12:30am, and landed in Duluth at 9 something. They couldn't have been kept on the plane for 10 hourse because the flight crew would then go past possible duty time.

I think the only policy that was changed was that now the CEO's home phone number isn't listed in the phone book. From what I remember from a Wall Street Journal article (they did a great 2 or 3 page article on the entire ordeal, very detailed in classic WSJ style), the main factor behind the plane finally getting to a gate was a passenger calling the NWA President at home from their cell, and informing him of the dismal conditions on board.

I'm too lazy to Google for the article, but I'm sure someone who wants to (or wants to refresh my memory if I'm incorrect) can look it up. The article was probably in 1999 or 2000.

OK, found it. An interesting read for those of you who don't recall the details. Unfortunately, Wall Street Journal is a pay-only site, but I managed to find the article through my local library's online database.

Some highlights of the 1999 fiasco from the article:

* NW1829, a 757, left SXM forr DTW 3 hours late. Over Georgia, they found out that DTW was closed... plane rerouted to Tampa.

* NWA told passengers, upon arrival in Tampa, that the flight would leave for DTW at 6:15am the next day.

* Passengers got to airport for 6:15am flight to find out that crew rest requirements said crew couldn't fly until noon.

* Plane got to DTW only to find that they got to "get in line and expect at least a two-hour wait."

* After a general outcry over previous choices, "The Princess Bride" was the in-flight... err... in-hold movie.

* After several hours, pilots called their chief Detroit pilot, and asked for help... he wasn't able to do anything.

* Around 5 hours into the ordeal, toilets started overflowing.

* Flight Attendants began urging passengers to write letters to John Dasburg, NWA CEO. Dr. Goldstein decided to go one step farther and look up his phone number.

From the article: "The Goldsteins figured Mr. Dasburg must live in one of the nicer suburbs of Minneapolis. Mrs. Goldstein's uncle lives in one of those suburbs, Edina, Minn. They called Edina directory assistance on their cell phone. To their amazement, they found a listing."

Word of the call got to the cockpit, and the captain also called Mr. Dasburg. 20 minutes later, they got the call from gate control to go to a gate that had been empty for hours. 30 hours after leaving SXM they were getting off the plane.

How can NWA continue to stay in business? Here at PFN they typically charge 100 dollars more than ASQ/FRL/COM. And when your cheapest flight outtahere is 298USD before taxes and fees, that is nothing to sneeze at. I have been stuck behind FLG CR2 waiting for then to do SOMETHING, until I hear ground tell them about a groundstop in MEM. Of course this brilliant brain says he wants to stay right there. In the meantime there are 2 172's 3 PA38's and a King Air wanting to use the damn runway! hissyfit

From a pax standpoint, in 04 I flew FLG/NWA/HA to HNL. The CR2 had a tire blowout after landing in MEM, the A320 to LAX was hotter than sitting next to a blast furnace,  hot  and the APU died 45 minutes from LAX. On the return trip not a single drink/peanut/pretzel was served, and the CR2 was 4 hours late out of MEM.  white

I WILL get off the plane! Jail? bring it on!

I have no idea how the crew avoided a riot. And I would love for law enforcement to try and arrest someone should they try to leave....

I'm with you. Once I was on CO before it turned into the customer service jewel it is now  sarcastic  (I believe it was 96 or 97) It was IAH-MTY on 735 and I got the exit row. I was briefed about my responsibilities, etc. When we arrived in MTY, a measly 55 mins. flight, as the plane got to the gate and parked, we all hear a shriek from the back galley. Then, an F/A comes walking briskly and yelling that someone had stolen her wallet. She got all the way to the front, grabbed the PA and very angry said, textually because I remember perfectly: "I am such and such F/A. I served you dinner and drinks in the flight for which you "Mexicans" (sic.) oughta' (sic.) be grateful. And we arrived in YOUR country, and my wallet gets stolen. Nobody, and I mean nobody gets outta' (sic.) this plane until it's found. It's expensive too, it's special skin"! All this with a Texas drawl you wouldn't believe.

She returned to the back galley, furious. The wait started. I was offended  grumpy  due to the rather let's say...  grumpy  agressive way she adressed us "Mexicans". Ten minutes passed, then 20, until I thought to myself: "If they don't open the freaking door in five more minutes I'm opening the exit." Of course being Mexico, cops would have taken ME to jail, where my lawyers would be waiting and then have the F/A arrested for kidnapping me (last flight, crew overnighted in MTY) I was really about to start opening the exit when I saw the Captain briskly coming with a stern face towards the back galley, so I stopped. Immediately thereafter the main door was opened and we all started to disemark. I read later the cleaning crew found the wallet in a meal carts. I don't not know what the Captain said to her.

I sympathiza with the F/A but is it that easy to steal a wallet on a freaking tube at 31,000ft? And a short tube at that in a flight 55 mins. block to block? I believe she was rather a dimwit, not for losing the wallet, I can agree. But making that announcement in that tone? It immediately got everybody on a defensive, angry position

I managed to find the article through my local library's online database.

Interesting article, I appreciate your effort and writing the key points. Thankyou.

I don't feel sorry for anyone who has a bad experience with nwa...Any company that treats their employees like scumbags like nw has continually done then I say buyer beware..........

Ever flown US Scareways. They make Northwest look like British Airways! I have had good experiences on NWA, but that was back in the early 80's. I think I'll stick with DAL and AAL. I still have to try SWA...

I wasn't aware that there was more than one. I didn't live in the DTW area at the time, but moved here shortly after that happened. I was living near STL and the only news we ever got was about TWA, which was in the St. Louis news a lot at that time.

Here is a link to an article about it.

http://www.globalethics.org/newsline...ssue.tmpl?articleid=01140112463163

From the article.

On January 2 and 3, 1999, more than a foot of snow fell on Detroit Metro Airport, causing many airlines to cancel their incoming flights. Northwest, however, continued to land roughly 30 planes as the blizzard continued.

As many as 7,000 Northwest fliers were stuck on the planes for as long as 11 hours. In some cases, the planes ran out of food and water, and toilets overflowed.

I don't think the article states the case correctly though. It says that Northwest continued to send planes into DTW as the blizzard continued. The blizzard was on Saturday and the airport was closed. By Sunday afternoon the airport had reopened and Northwest began sending planes in. There was just one problem, the snow had not been removed from the gate areas.

I had flown Delta into DTW on the afternoon of January 3 and there were Northwest planes parked everywhere out on the taxiways. It was crazy. Someone really dropped the ball with that one to send planes into DTW and the snow was not cleared away from the gates. I'm not sure who is responsible for clearing snow away from the gates whether it is Northwest or Wayne County.

That airline really needs to get it's head out of it's arse sometimes.

Amen to that. I was stuck on a US 734 at PHL for 4hrs when I was 13, and I couldn't stand it. The f/a's made up for it by serving drinks. At take off, we started singing " For hes a jolly good fella".

Lie about what.

You should really read the article before contributing to a thread. I suggest you read it and then think about my comment about the passengers being lied to.  Smile

I am surprised that the passengers did not create a rukus after being kept on board for 7 hrs....or did they??

Anyupdates on that one? Isn't it so that if a passenger wants to get off, they have to let him/her off?

Insight is appreciated!
