MKE Concourse "C" Expansion

Fri Sep 08, 2006 7:16 am

Does anyone know who is going to occupy the 8 new gates at the end of concourse "C"? I know that there is that temporary extension to the concourse with something like 4 gates, but will the carriers using those gates then occupy the new gates when the temporarty structure is torn down? It seems to me like some of the new gates may be available, opening up the possibility of a new carrier. Or will HP/US relocate to those gates, finally allowing YX to occupy all of concourse "D"? Anyone know?

From what I understand HP/US will move over there once the new gates in C are open up. Midwest will then have all of D. It may not seem like YX needs more gates, but in the mornings when any small delays occur planes are stuck waiting for a open gate. These news gates will help to fix that.

Currently they have 12 jetways and 14 parking spots, and three of those jetways are for gates than cannot park the M80. The upcoming winter schedule has 20 aircraft at gates between 6:30am and 8:20am. It works okay if delays are fairly minimal. But just as often it's a struggle in winter to make it work out without too many delays and gate changes. A common, frustrating scenario is when a comparably minor snow event in the midwest makes for relatively run-of-the mill delays in the early am block at MKE, but the east coast inbounds from BOS / LGA / EWR / PHL / DCA / ATL launch on time and sit for 20-30 minutes looking for gates. There are last minut e gate changes, missed connections and rolling delays that take all day to recover from.

Like most hub operations, Midwest has big gaps during the day with few aircraft on the ground. But it's definitely tight in the morning without another gate or two. And as the M80 replacements arrive down the road a bit, they will probably add a few more flights.

Are the "temporary" digs in "C" staying? Or as I joke with my co-workers "where MKE airport furniture comes to die"

I've always been under the impression that there would be a net increase in gates, even with YX occupying all of C and those remaining tenants (US/HP, UA, AC, etc.) moving to fill some of the new space. So one would think that it was built for some future accomodations; it would seem silly not to.

On that note, any peep on DL moving over to E? Or is putting all of the SkyTeam members in one concourse just an unnecessary relocation?

Should still have some open gates for additional carriers and expansion.

16 gates in C:

UA/AC 2
AA 2
FL 2
DL 2
US 2
F9 1

That leaves five gates unassigned as things would currently appear. Of course things could change. Maybe AA wants a 3rd gate. Maybe DL does want to move to E. At this point it appears USA3000 is not returning to Milwaukee this winter with scheduled service. But there are invariably snowbird charters from somebody every winter that need gates.

I can't wait! Waiting for the MD-80 7:30 TPA to be tugged over from the hanger in winter, with all the backed up flights as you described, can become a clown-car circus act.

checkmark Agreed. If they are gonna keep that around they better fix it up a bit. Its very plain inside and if you wanna use the bathroom you have to walk all the way to the main councourse C gates.

Well right now on the MKE website it says FL is currently in C, but I've been told this is due to renovation in E. And I also think there would be an issue with DL going to E because of a lack of space to park aircraft, or so I've heard.

I wish they'd stay. Flew them last year to PUJ and was impressed. I remmeber seeing on here they were gonna disontinue CUN but not completely pull out.

Word around the airport is that they will be torn down once all is done. As for ratty, the gates aren't bad for temp gates, very nice in my opinion, I've seen worse.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Pretty much every year there are regular chartered flights from Milwaukee to various places in Mexico and the Caribbean. It can vary from year to year who flies them, and perhaps USA 3000 still has some of this work lined up. But in years past they have had regular, scheduled flights from Milwaukee to Orlando and/or Fort Myers, and those don't appear to be coming back this winter.

US/HP signed a lease not to long ago to keep them in D for a few more years. Remember that most airlines in MKE are signatory members and cannot be forced to move against their will.

We will be moving back to E60 and E61 very shortly. We are just waiting on the gate podiums to arrive. I for one cant wait to get back to E, that way we can continue our rivalry with the old coots who work on the Northwest ramp.

Actually the airport is trying to get us (FL) to take three gates on the new C concourse for a reduced rate.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

hmm... If there are extra gates, could there be a chance of bringing in a new carrier, like B6 or G4 for example?
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

G4 already has some charter flights to/from MKE, but I doubt they would start regular service, since they tend to stay away from big cities and go for the smaller regional ones.
