NW Flight From MSP Diverted To GEG

Fri Sep 08, 2006 8:24 am

I just thought this was interesting so I decided to post.

Today, NW flight 1483 MSP-MSO was diverted to GEG because of a mechanical problem on board (flaps I think). The reason given to the passengers was that Spokane has a longer runway, and they didn't want to risk landing in MSO, which they said has a shorter runway, which I thought was an interesting excuse because MSO has a 9500ft runway, whereas GEG's longest is 9001ft. hmmm....somethings not right

Was this an A319? I know MSO has more terrain to deal with, other than that, I see no reason to divert to GEG.

Perhaps GEG has more facilities to deal with the problem? The runway length reason sounds a little bogus.

Yep it was a A319, I was told by the NW ramp agent in MSO about the issue. The terrain shouldn't have stopped them I don't think, the only other thing I can see was the visibility was reduced a little due to the smoke from nearby fires, but other than that, it seems to me that NW probably fixed the problem in GEG because of the facilities, not because of the runway. We have had 767's land here with mechanical problems in the past with no issues.

I think the reason was that GEG has the longest runway not protruded by Mountainist terrain in the area.

Anyone want to make any bets as to how long NW will wait before allowing passengers off the aircraft?  stirthepot
