Since its launch in May 1999 the airline has been unsuccessful in its pursuit to serve the Egyptian capital. I have an interview transcript that dates back to late 1999 where Antonis Simigdalas, Aegean Airlines General Manager, states CAI is a destination where they envisage high profitability once given the authority to serve. It's believed that initially both the Egyptian and Greek authorities were against this move however in recent years the Egyptian authorities granted permission whilst their Greek counterparts continued to block the move to protect ailing state carrier, Olympic Airlines.
The airline will launch the daily B733* service from 01Dec06, with the following schedule:
ATH CAI A3930 1234567 09:25/11:25 2hr00min 0 B733
CAI ATH A3931 1234567 12:15/14:20 1hr05min 0 B733
* one of the recently ordered A320s has already been earmarked for the route.
The airline will compete against EgyptAir's daily A320 service (MS747/748) and Olympic Airlines's daily B734 service (OA325/326).
