DL Service From Wilmington DE

Fri Sep 08, 2006 10:49 am

Does anyone know hot the DL service from ILG is doing? I personally would like to see it doing good and maybe get some new carriers in in there...however there would need to be some major renovations/upgrades done to the terminal and parking lot.

Does ILG really need its own service? PHL is practically next door.

Well for those of us in DE, the closest airports are PHL/BWI/SBY which could be more than 1-2 hour drive if you live in the center of the state (Dover). PHL is overpriced ..yes even with WN.

I wish DL started the ILG service sooner. I had a project in New Castle, DE - very close to ILG. It just sucked getting there.

The very next week, the ILG route commenced. Just my luck.

No offense, but there are millions and millions of people in this country who would be ecstatic to live within two hours (let alone one hour) of a HUB that included Southwest service, let alone TWO HUBS with Southwest service. And there aren't even hundreds of thousands of people in central Delaware.

And to suggest that PHL fares are too a high - compared to ILG fares, I doubt it.

The addition of ILG service by DL was a gimmick to market DL as the only carrier to serve all 50 states, and ultimately, I'm afraid it has less than a 50/50 chance of survival (and I think that's being generous). Kudos to ILG, DL, and Delaware if it does survive, but I wouldn't bet $5 it will.

No offense taken. However, I can't stand Southwest, so living close to major airports with WN service is not a turn on.

I am stating PHL fares in general are too high. I can drive 1 hour to BWI and get the a last minute RT fare at 3/4ths the cost out of PHL.

I also believe DE was the only state without commercial air service until DL started.

The cost of starting an unviable service just for a marketing gimmick is not one that Delta would pay. They're in it to make money. Success, of course is to be determined.

I disagree. If there was so much money in ILG, then why haven't other carriers maintained service in the past, if not for the glory of serving all 50 states (UA marketed this back in the day also). Simply put, BWI and PHL are within an hour's drive and Amtrak can take you to either airport as well.

That is the biggest crock of BS I have ever heard. You clearly have never been in strategic and route planning at a major airline. Just look at all the flights DL started to small midwestern cities after AirTran started service. There was no way they were going to make money. DL, as many of the legacy carriers have in the past (although DL is about the last, sans NW, to stop chasing market share), have flown many routes for the wrong reasons. This is no different. DL's route decisions in the past few years have be akin to trying to nail jello to the wall, or better yet the scatter shot approach - try a bunch of things and hope some of them work. It's a risky strategy. There is no way in hell DL went into ILG because they thought it would make money. At best it was there next best money loser, but I"m not even convinced of that.

Liar  Wink

Of course they're trying things and seeing if they stick. They're going higher risk, now that the US market is so saturated. And they will fail in some cases. In the ILG case, it's trying to squeeze a market out of the possibility that some travelers might find the airport more convenient. Some will, but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to make money. And it's hardly preposterous to serve an airport in the Megalopolis, within an hour of the world's largest hub, and at the head of a peninsula with hardly any air service. Going head to head with AirTran in in a losing scenario is another situation entirely.

Yea, we havent had a major have scheduled service since United WAAYY back when (before i was born) with 737-200's

It would be more convenient for me to use ILG if I didn't have passes on AA. I believe DL will do ok @ ILG only becuase of the people that live in the south of Wilmington, which is a substantial amount of people. Or at least enough to fill up two daily CRJ's

One thing I am not is a Liar. Clearly, I was not being literal with my comment. Having said that, everything you said above, in theory, is correct. HOWEVER, this market is the proverbial "tail wagging the dog." It was put in because DL has too many aircraft, no place to put them, and this allowed them to market themselves as the only airline to serve all 50 states. It's a flying billboard, and I doubt it'll get them much incremental revenue, but I'll bet a chunk of change that: 1) they lose a chunk of change, and 2) the market doesn't last.

But, of course.

I figured you were being humorous. I'm just so brutally honest, more so than anyone I know of (except maybe Kathy Griffen) that I just had to respond.

The loads ATL-ILG tomorrow show 45% full, 42% Sunday, and 27% Monday. ILG-ATL looks like 27% full tomorrow, 70% Sunday and 37% Monday. Could certainly be better.

LF are traditionally slower this time of year..not for just DL or this route. All carriers will experience a slump this time of year.

ILG is the ideal reliever airport for PHL. I still think WN should have gone to ILG instead of PHL. ILG is to Philadelphia as Gary (forget airport code) is to Chicago.

wonder bout ILG, once when I was driving back from PHL to Silver Spring, MD we stopped for gas in ILG. No offense but IMO it looked like a dump, old trashy houses, dirty sidewalks and poor unemployed people. I didnt know there was black people in Delaware

That was a pretty pointless, ignorant, and bordline racist post.  Yeah sure

Interesting. The service is brand new though and I'm not certain how many PA/NJ PHL users are even aware of it. Maybe DL should have started out with flights to JFK and BOS as well as ATL - more PHL commuters.

Do you think ILG could ever handle the 100+ flights/day WN wants out of PHL? The airport would require major capital improvements, which would need to be paid for by the State - WN does not invest in airport uprades. Also, the ATC would likely not be too favorable to adding a new 100+ flight/day airport so close to PHL in the already over stressed NE corridor. However, ABE may have worked.
