NW (Mesaba) RJ 85's

Fri Sep 08, 2006 7:55 pm

When will the Mesaba RJ 85's be pulled out of service? They're comfortable planes, as a passenger, I'll miss them

By oct. 29th they'll be out of MSP(i heard this from mspupdate.com), and then after dec. 18th. they'll be gone entirely. I'm trying to decide whether to dump $250 for a ride on them. I've never ridden on one.

I saw a few at MSP about to be retired, it was missing titles, parked on the ramp. Wouldn't mind flying on one of them one day, but I don't think I ever will.

Yeah, I used to fly them between DSM-MSP all the time. I looked forward too it. They were by far the most comfortable economy class I've flown in. The only downside was that the window view for the most part wasn't spectacular. But I quickly got over that thinking how uncomfortable the ride could of been if I were on a CRJ.

I've heard a totally unsubstatiated story that the demand in Europe for these frames to replace older models turned out to be much higher than expected and that the leasors actually were able to get slightly more for them than NW was paying. Anyone know about this?

I loved my flights on the A-85. Great seat pitch due to the scope clause, and as stated before, a very smooth and quiet ride. (Well, at least until the "dinosaur roar.")  Wink

You are correct. I cannot remember the details...but Northwest's RJ-85s are headed to Europe due to the demand. I wish I can remember the airline that is replacing their BAe-146 fleet with these aircraft...maybe somebody else here will.

I'll miss them. They're comfortable, and they take off like a race car.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

As a CityJet regular, I'm looking forward to the RJ ... They are a long overdue 146-200 replacement.

Who is doing the conversion work for the aircraft?

Let's hope Cityjet keeps the 5 accross. We flew back from Paris CDG las sunday night to LCY and the 6 accross is just to tight. Especially in the back. No space to move and I was sitting by the window. Most uncomfortable.

I'd love to see it as well but I'm afraid it is unrealistic. Economics will win with pax comfort.

I flew on a NW RJ85 just this past weekend on the CLE-DTW route. Man thats a very comfy little jet for an RJ. The best "RJ" I have ever been on without a doubt - its a lot more than a regular RJ, at least in the NW config. I am glad I atleast got to fly it once. I might book another trip somewhere just to get on one again.  Smile
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

Absolutely... I got my first (and likely only) ride on one a few weeks ago DTW-PLN...although the fact that I was in 1D may bias me...it was by far the most comfortable "RJ" flight I've ever been on. The flight attendant was also very talkative, and intelligent (not to mention not-hard-on-the-eyes)...we (the pax in 1C, her, and myself) spent a good portion of the flight talking about Mesaba, the RJ 85 (and it's retirement), etc.

Quoting Lobster (Reply 4):

Yeah... I did a CRJ-200 on the way back three days later (PLN-DTW), and I had forgotten how painful they are (I still don't think my neck has forgiven me). If I never ride on one again, I wouldn't be disappointed.

If asked to rank the Regional aircraft I've beeen on, hands down, its RJ 85 -> ERJ-145 -> EMB-120/Saab 340 (I personally can't really tell a difference) -> Dash 8 -> something else -> anything else -> CRJ-200.
