In December, my family and I will be flying (with 2 year old kid in tow) on an American Airlines 757 nonstop to Newark from Los Angeles. I know plenty about child safety and seats in aircraft, but it appears after some research that car seats are actually wider than the seats of AA's 757 Y class. In two calls to American airlines, I was told that the seat width of the AA 757 in Economy is 17", yet I havn't seen a single children's seat manufactured (FAA approved) that fits within this. We use a Britax Marathon forward-facing seat, and I'm fairly certain that it's close to, if not wider than the AA 757 Y class seat.

I've never seen a car seat brought to an airplane to seat toddlers. I've seen lots of kids - infants, toddlers etc either in the basinets in the bulkhead row or kids sitting on parents laps during flights.

Not sure what aircraft you've been on. I've seen many, sometimes many in one flight

Im actually surprised how much flak I've taken on this issue from friends and family as well. Am I the only one who is concerned with my child's safety in flight? True, accidents don't happen often but that's still no reason to flirt with danger. Even rough turbulence can threaten child's safety, and the lack of strength and bulk in their legs and waist make lap belts almost entirely inneffective.
