Menzies Aviation Sacks Six Staff Members At AKL

Sun Sep 10, 2006 1:16 pm

Six baggage handlers and cleaners based at Auckland International Airport have been sacked and another 20 have been issued with written warnings, following an undercover sting of their activities

LOL! And this comes as a shock? I guess it is just not an issue in the US. The theft of luggage in SEA would make you vomit like the exorcist.

Shocking. Don't expect it to happen in your own back yard I guess. But in saying that, I'm sure this kind of behavior is present all over the place.

.

Not only that but we are told where they live, what they had for breakfast, which of their relatives are members of national sports teams (everybody in NZ is related to someone who plays for a national sports team), and all the driving convictions of their immediate family.

I hate to sound racist, but Menzies seem to employ directly from the Otara Markets. Just look at the calibre of their workforce. This comes as NO suprise to me at all. What does suprise me, is that something like this didn't happen years ago.

Sorry NZ1, but when my son was paying for his CPL by loading bags at AKL he was hounded out of the job (after having been beaten up) by refusing to join in with a systematic bag stealing ring, all of whom were Scottish. I urged him to go the police, but they took no interest.

Rongotai. I am sorry your son went through that ordeal. Thats truly horrible. All I meant was, that these days, every time I walk out across the tarmac, all I see are brown faces, and fat guts. The amount of damage these animals inflict on the aircraft mounts up too. We have had numerous aircraft in the hangar over the past 12 months, due to "loading errors". CAn't say we have had anywhere near the same amount of NZ handled aircraft come in for structural repairs.

Hi NZ1

Your insider comment is interesting, but I think what you are describing is a function of low unemployment and poor working conditions rather than race. The aforementioned son now flies out of LGW and from what I can gather the trend exists there as well - but the ethnic identification is different! Driving trucks into the sides of aeroplanes seems to be the incompetence of choice there.

What happens in these allegedly 'low skill' jobs is that the contracts go to the lowest tenderers, which in turn means that the conditions have to driven down and the commitment to training and supervision is reduced, with the inevitable consequences that you describe. The most scarey example of all is hospital cleaning! What employers don't seem to be able to get into heads is that it doesn't matter what the skills requirements are, it is the consequences of screw ups that actually determines who you want doing the job - and therefore what you have to pay.

With New Zealand's current unemployment rate Menzies' problem now will be finding 6 new people who are any better. It's a puzzle for them really - it isn't a job they can outsource to China!

Actually, theft from bags have gone down considerably from last year and are really not at any excessive level. Our main problems are a frequent lack of enough rampers during busier times of the day and late at night to meet, load and push flights and bags coming late to claim. I remember a few weeks during the summer when waiting an hour plus for bags to arrive off a flight was the norm. I even recall one night where the average wait for bags was over 2 hours after arriving at the gate! Thankfully now that things are slowing down we are back to a faily normal half hour or less for the last bag to come down to claim after arrival.

Menzies has control of the baggage system at AKL and they were found to be putting all of their customer bags thru first when the system is sposed to be automated. It caused numerous delays for NZ as well as several other carriers (QF, TG, MH, FJ etc) it is supposed to have stopped now but you only have to see what happens at the airport when bags get all jammed up in the system.

On the whole AKL airport is very safe and there is little in the way of theft... being on the small side it means that everyone knows everyone so it would be hard for people to get away with anything.

Rongotai - I agree entirely with your comments. I'm amazed the likes of EK will let a low budget ground handler touch their aircraft in the first place.

It happens everywhere in the world, the "golden ramper days" are over and pay is on the lower scale...............

Money rules and cheap is in fashion now..... however big kudos to the hard working, honest & dedicated rampers..... I appreciate your work

No, simply saying that Menzies has a huge issue with theft in SEA. One of the Ramp Managers for Menzies in Seattle was busted for stealing golf clubs. If a Ramp Manager is stealing, imagine the examples he set on the guys watching him do it? I know theft happens with any company you work for, but sometimes you find a tad bit more of it happening with subcontracts (not just speaking of airlines of course).

Fact is, the less paid one is, they try to justify their theft reasons for low wages. Of course you don't have to take my word for it. Take a look at Walmart for example. Every store has an employee theft issue. Theft is even an issue with airline employees directly hired by the airline. But, theft is lower when compared to a subcontractor in ANY industry.

This issue in AKL is very minor compared to the real loss involved. Long time theft employees can cost an airline hundreds of thousands of dollars. Grocery store employees with 10 years of service, taking $5.00 per day, can tally up a cost that would blow our minds.

So to answer your question, I am not aiming my comments directly at Alaska. I am sure MIA has a much higher theft issue, but I only have knowledge of the happenings here in SEA. Nothing pisses me off more than a thief. Especially when you learn it is a coworker.

Stuff has been taken out of my suitcase twice at LHR..... which is very disrespect full and I do not have any tolerance with sh.. like that, you only hear about the big bust at any airport and the excuses used if cut in action it blows my mind.... unreal how low people go.... I am all for 100% screening at the start of your shift and at the end, theft is done in all ranks.

At JFK the rates range from the lowest GlobeGround $7.50/hr. to the highest JetBlue 10.50/hr.

Yikes! Twice? That just burns me. Nothing is worse than having something stolen. We work hard to earn our things, and someone comes along and steals it?

Last night I came across 2 suspects breaking into a car. A brief foot pursuit lead into the suspect dropping a case of CD's. Although I did not catch the suspects (they had a good running start), I did observe one of them falling directly on his face while he ran down a flight of stairs. I found a few broken teeth, and drips of blood on the ground. While I wish I would have caught him, I am sure he will think twice before breaking into another car. Hopefully the reflection of his face in the next window will reveal his missing teeth!

Sorry to hear about your 2 incidents with your luggage. I guess carrying on the more important things is the only option.

On a side note, did you know 1 out of 11 people walking through a stores front door shoplifts? Imagine what the theft ratio is for employees! YIKES!  Sad

Menzies pays them around $11-15 ph. NZ pays around $14+ ph depending on length of service etc. NZ is in the process of changing that tho, but either way I think it will still be more than the peanuts Menzies pays.

What does that compare to in US wages? What does an apartment in NZ cost per month? Do they have a minimum wage in NZ?

Thanks!!

According to one salary/cost of living calculator I referenced, $30,000 in Auckland, NZ is roughly equivilant to $32,000 in Seattle, WA. (Granted, I don't know if this is a USD-USD or NZD-USD)

Well they were special "Swiss army" knives which were meant for my working colleges over in Canada......... had no choice to take them in my hand luggage, arrived in YYZ and guess what the box and instructions were left in my luggage..... but knives were gone.....

I call that taxes!  Smile

Anyhoo, baggage theft is a big problem, but one we have to live with. If airlines were forced to be accountable for the contractors they hire, then I think we would seem some real changes. Otherwise, it is tough sh!t for the consumer.

I tried to rig a suitcase once, so that if it was opened without the correct combination the offender would be sprayed with a poisonous gas that would induce hallucinations, projectile vomiting, incontinence, ending with a violent twitching death. However, I was informed it was illegal to carry gas onto the plane so I gave up.
Keep on truckin'...

One NZ$ gets you about 50US cents. Apartments here in WLG cost about $300+ per week, Auckland would be about $500+. Yes NZ has a minium wage and in April it went up, its now $10 something, was previously $9.
