Oh shut up, the interview in no way used the events of 9/11 for the sake of publicity.

The reporter asked the question of 9/11 and it's impact on the industry and Herb gave his opinions:

Q: Most people blame 9/11 for the industry's problems. But how much of the financial difficulties would have surfaced anyway if there had been no 9/11?

A: (paraphrased) 9/11 really hurt Southwest Airlines. That much is clear. We were having a fabulous year up until 9/11 occurred.

With respect to the rest of the industry, I think 9/11 only accentuated what was already transpiring because most of the carriers had already started losing substantial amounts of money before 9/11.

These are newspaper interviews, not Southwest Press Releases.

The reporter asked the question (surely in the interst that tomorrow marks 5 years since 9/11) and Herb gave his answer.

Why don't you explain how that translates into Southwest PR

Quoting UnitedTristar (Reply 3):
I will loose the attitude when you wake up to reality.

How about this: If you want to be taken seriously, explain your opinions. Don't just spit out the first six words that come to mind when you see a headline title. When all you say is "what an arrogant ass" without explaining why you think so, you really think you're entitled to mannerism?

Think about a couple of things...

1. We're on the eve of the 5th anniversary of the attacks, and practically every media outlet under the sun is doing some kind of "report" or "follow-up", or, in Disney/ABC's case, a "Crocku-drama". Look at the linked article:

In an interview last week, Mr. Kelleher addressed the company's response to the industry's problems and gave his take on what's happened since 9/11:

Do you really think that he sought the media out, or that the media sought him out? If anyone is "using" 9/11, it's obvious who's doing that, not for publicity, but for ratings.

2. Look at the thrust of the questions. In early 2001, he gave up 2 of his 3 executive roles, but the events of 9/11 and its aftermath changed all that, increasing, rather than decreasing his level of involvement with SWA. The reporter asked him various questions (since Herb has quite a long tenure in the industry), and Herb offered his opinions in response. What was he supposed to do, respond with a "no comment" to every interview question?

If you are (as your username suggests) an United employee, you (and all the other UAL and AAL folks) continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, as are the 9/11 victims and their loved ones. That said, I'm sorry to see the way the news and entertainment media are treating the event, but I think your apparent anger at Herb/Southwest is misplaced. Understandable, but misplaced.

Peace be with you...

I am a bit lost. What record does he speak of? He still made a profit and has since 9/11 and through 9/11. I read it but I am not making sense of it.

well personally what I would have done was to say "Sorry but I do not believe that is an appropriate question at this time."

they would have had nothing to write...respecting those who died...this was not just an airline thing....this was a humanity thing.

That's you...

Is anyone, anywhere who discusses 9/11, or answers posed questions about 9/11 also a heinous, insensitive person?

Like I said, I can and do understand how sensitive a subject it is for UAL and AAL folks, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I think you're over-reacting just a tad...

Dude, name me ONE other airline that was so successful that it was also on its way to a record, then this argument would be valid.

How on earth do you conclude from the article that someone is being taken advantage of, or otherwise needs to be defended?

The victims of 9/11 are being taken advantage of for free publicity based on tragic events that ended in their deaths. Like I said...simply stating that it was the wrong time to discuss this topic would have been better.

I'd agree, but in other venues. I don't see that at all in Herb's interview...

But it's okay for all of the "OTHER" airlines to talk about 9/11 at any other time and how it ruined their business plans? It was an interview, he was asked a question, he answered it. Get over it!

It does, indeed, seems like it's altogether okay for the U.S. legacies (" 'OTHER' airlines") use 9/11 as the scapegoat of choice for their dysfunctional business plans, which had begun to unravel for the better part of a year before 9/11/01.

To repeat what Herb correctly stated: With respect to the rest of the industry, I think 9/11 only accentuated what was already transpiring because most of the carriers had already started losing substantial amounts of money before 9/11.

Get over it already, it was five years ago and the media is making hay in every way possible over this five year anniversary. There isn't a single network NOT wrapped up in this to their eyebrows. It was a tragedy, it's over, move on.

Quoting UnitedTristar (Reply 11):

I'm sure most have been propositioned for interviews (Those that were at the helms on 9/11 that is). However, Southwest has the unique perspective of surviving 9/11 without a single layoff and remain profitable ever since. As an uninformed reader, I would rather hear what "That guy at Southwest" has to say rather than anyone at United which was already spitting up enough red-ink to sink a battleship on September 10th.

UnitedTristar,

You speak of arrogance...........look in the mirror my friend.

As others have pointed out, Herb was asked a direct question and he gave a direct answer as anyone would have.

9/11 was an event that shook the world and effected each individual differently. Obviously you are very sensitive about the event, but don't put others down for talking about or acknowleding it and its short term and long term effects on the airline industry.

Yes some people here have a chip on their shoulder.
It's not like Southwest advertizes like "Our planes were never hyjacked... book now and be safe against terrorism" or "only airline which came out better from 9/11! Book your 9/11 special anniversary offer now, $29 and up"
Herb just discusses the major impact 9/11 had on his company, which seems a normal handling of requests from the media. He might have rather not answered the question at all as the reminding in any way of 9/11 doesn't sell planetickets.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Apparently Herb Kelleher is not alone in his belief (albeit stated in words kinder and gentler than mine) that the U.S. legacies have used the events of 9/11/01 and its aftermath as an after-the-fact strawman excuse and coverup for their failed business plans:
