Pilots Who Are Not From The Country They Fly For!

Mon Sep 11, 2006 5:57 pm

Stupid question, but I have no idea!

I flew BA the other day SOU-MAN, pilot was French.

Flew Emirates LGW-DXB, pilot was American.

Flew Virgin last year LHR-LAX, F/O was Swiss (and female a looked gorgeous!!)

Anybody want to hazard a guess as to what percentage of a airline's aircrew are not resident of the country from where the airline they work for originates?

Well I would guess that for an airline like Emirates it is in the 90% range?

I know CX has a pile of English/Australian/New Zealanders flying, possibly some Americans as well.

CI has about 30% foreign pilots.

Slightly off topic, about 20 years ago I heard a statement from someone who worked Tech at JNB that LH had more South African techs than German techs.

All three examples could be pilots resident of the airline home base. Resident, passport, and place of birth can be three different things. E.g. the swiss FO may have been born in france, has a swiss passport, and resides in the UK.

From all over the world, a lot of them are residents in Hong Kong. The majority of pilots in CX are expats. The company was set up by two expat pilots, an american and australian.

for FR, i know we have pilots from :

Ireland, UK, France, Swiss, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Brazil, USA, Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Sweden

and those are just the ones I personnally know, but I'm sure there's gotta be more than that.

But although they work for an Irish company, lots of them are still at home, being based in their home country.

This will be temporary, maybe for next 3-4 years.....the sudden surge in civil aviation has created the need to use expat pilots....in a few years time, when lot of Indian pilots come out of training academies, etc., the expats will be pushed out for sure.... smile

I think not, the local training capacity (around 200 per year) is less than the current order ledger.

At some point one must to obtain a local licence.

At some point one must to work for a local airline.

Your point being ?

Just out of curiosity, why do we men feel inclined to comment on a female pilot's looks??

If you look at most of the job requirements of pilots it doesn't say you have to be a citizen of the airline's country. Because of the nature of the business, pilots comer from all corners of the world. That being said, it is VERY difficult to fly in many countries if you obtained your licenses at a different country. Places like UAE, or most of ASIA, they use a standard form of license that is why there are many pilots from different countries. Europe uses a specialised license system so you will not see many non-European pilots there.

I was made to feel really old yesterday. I was called into the flightdeck of a BA A319 to talk to the Captain, and it was a young girl who looked not much older than my daughter!. (My daughter is 24)
I asked the dispatcher who is about 30 yrs old, and she said they were about the same age.
Its time to get early retirement. I wish an offer was coming.

At BA there's a nice mix of nationalities amongst flight deck crew. In particular it seems a lot of the new FOs are Dutch.

SQ has a lot of Expat / Foreign Crew. Many from them are from Scandinavia and Australia. Thai (TG) used to have around 60 foreign pilots. Most of them
were Danish or Swedish. The last left 1996. Since then it is all Thai.

Phuket Air used to have 3 French Captains. One of them has a bar in Hua Hin now. Well....

I deal with a very diverse group of expat Captains at KE. They primarily have
American, Australian, Canadian, Malaysian, and Russian Captains, along with
at least one Austrian, Colombian, Mexican, and a New Zealander in their 777
left seater group. There are also probably a good nationality mix in the 744
captains as well.

My father was an expat captain with China Airlines for 4 years (MD11 and A340), now he is back in Brazil working in Gol (737-7/8). I know that there are some Brazilians working in Air India, Singapore, Korean Air, Emirates, Ryanair, China Airlines, EVA, and I heard about one working in JAL.

The majority of Cathay Pacific's pilots are Australian, British, and Canadian there are also some locals that have come throught the cadet program.

I have also met a few Australian pilots at SQ, there are also a few Indian, English, Malay and Scandinavian pilots but the majority are Singaporean.
Cheers

I've flown SQ on numerous occassions, but on two particular instances, the captain was an Indian on one flight, while both the captain and the F/O were Indian on the other!

I've also had Australian, Dutch and British pilots flying me on SQ.

You can either work for a living, or you can fly airplanes. I'd rather fly!

Did they use the "NAMASHKAR" word.I doubt it since it was not an Indian carrier. It sounds good on VHF though.

I recall that even back in the 70's, quite a few AI pilots used to quit and join SQ....
