SFO started remote baggage check-in at their long term parking garage about 2 miles north of the Terminals. Unfortuntely, it doesn't seem to catching on because of the price, $5 per bag.

I fail to see how airport authorities at LAX hope to incentivize something, but have people pay for it.

The incentive is not having to stand in check-in lines. I would do it in a heartbeat when it is extended to the Union Station Fly-Away. I think this service is going to be very popular.
