AirNZ 737 Emergency Landing At AKL

Tue Sep 12, 2006 6:05 am

http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411749/828589

I assume this was fairly recent given the lack of information.
Anybody at AKL have anything further?

There are a couple of cancellations from AKL on the AirNZ website as well (NZ415 to WLG, NZ517 to CHC). Are these related?

Cheers
Time for a new viewing deck at AKL!

The report suggests it was an under carriage problem i would think the cancelation of the other flights were to check if there are anymore problems with the other 737's.

According to One News. 4 other flights are affected. I would say this is due to the aircraft not being able to operate the flights. Any idea what the rego is?

I can assure you that it was a little more serious than a small undercarriage problem.

Indeed it was NGJ

3 News said that NZ had agreed to an interview but had later declined.

Apparantley there was a problem with the landing gear and the aircraft had to turn back to Auckland but once landed smoke started coming into the cabin from the cockpit. The P/A system was not working so the F/A had to manually tell everyone that they were evacuating via the emergency slides from the doors.

All of this was according to several witnessess who were interviewed on One news.

TVNZ reporter Cameron Bennett was on board the flight. He said "shortly after take off passengers were informed by cabin crew that there was a problem on board. At that point he says the plane made a low descent and headed back to Auckland Airport.

Bennet says the plane made a smooth landing, but the cabin began to fill with smoke as it was taxiing back to the gate.

At that point the captain decided to evacuate passengers and crew via chutes

So this would of meant an over weight landing due to the 733 not being able to dump fuel? Because I have not heard in any reports about them flying around to burn off fuel.

No it wasn't overweight. The fuel load to CHC is only about 7200kg, max. Well below the max weight for the 733.

Not at the moment, no. Ill wait and see what pans out at work tomorrow first. May be able to tell you a bit more tomorrow night.

I would rather land ASAP instead of flying around the dump fuel, maybe the fuel was dumped while heading back?

Yes well done. With reading the trip report, OOR and what has been reported in the media, it seems they did an outstanding job.

I can tell you that the root cause was an electrical fault with the Stand-By Power Relay. This caused the Ram-Air inlet doors to remain closed when the aircraft landed, which in turn overheated the packs, causing smoke to fill the cabin.
