MIA Spotting & Widebody Movements

Wed Sep 13, 2006 12:37 am

I will be in the Miami Airport area on Boxing Day (26 Dec) and I'm looking at doing some spotting and photography!

I will be spotting between Sunrise and around 10 AM!

I've been told that sunrise in Miami will be around 07:05 on December 26th, is this correct?

I have looked through the schedules of flights to and from MIA, I have a few rare/heavy aircraft noted. Can someone tell me what will be around from Sunrise to around 10AM?

There are quite a few cargo airlines in MIA also, are there any cargo movements at this time?

Also where can I go for some decent spotting of both arrivals and departures, I am looking at doing some photography?

What runways are usualy used at this time in the morning?

There are alot of Heavy arrivals from S.America at around 5AM-6AM, I take it it isn't realy worth taking photos as it will be pitch black?

Thanks in advance,

Yes, but twilight starts at 0640...

Three places include:

the parking lot of a restaurant, the 94th Aero Squadron, at the corner of NW57th Avenue (Red Road) and NW 12th Street (Perimeter Road) on the south side of the airport...go behind the restaurant and there is a large parking lot located there. Obstructions include (infrequent) passing trains, and you can see take-offs / landings from 9 / 27 and 12/30.

The parking lot of a furniture store (ElDorado, I think...) at NW 72nd Avenue...continue west on Perimeter Road. It is at the threshold of R9 / 27, and you can see the arrivals (eastward landings) of many inbound Latin America flights, or the departures if they are using a westbound traffic pattern. Also good visibility of the western ramp of Cargo City. Not the greatest location, however...

NW 67th Avenue (Ludlam Road) and PBA Memorial Blvd is just to the SW of the intersection of 8L and 8R and 12, and offers the most views of take-offs and landings if traffic is eastbound, or if westbound mostly the climb-outs of aircraft taking off. Expect to see AA...and AA....and more AA...

Use maps.google.com to find these locations.

Enjoy!

Rob,

Are you going to rent a car that day ?

You can find a nice restaurant in the South part of the airport (94th Aero Squadron Restaurant
1395 N.W. 57th Avenue, Miami, FL 33126
Cuisines: American, Seafood, Steakhouse
Average price*: $20
Tel: 305.261.4220 )

It has a nice view of the south runway.

B742,

You were not specific about what metal was showing up. You just said generally.

This will give you an idea of arrivals at your time of day (real-time, of course).

The KE is a 744F, cargo obviously. I also know CI has a 744F coming in in the early morning, but not sure if it's daily and/or if it will be there the 26th.
