Mexicana Two Engine Shut Down

Wed Sep 13, 2006 6:41 am

It looks like flight 942 GDL-PDX (10 Sep) had its two engines shut down after it landed here in PDX. It was stuck on the runway. It had to be towed to the gate. It then was towed to the United cargo ramp. United does the maintenance for Mexicana here in PDX. I guess Mexicana had to fly two mechanics up from Mexico to help fix the plane.

This might explain the mess MX had yesterday with the A320 fleet. Flight MX393 MEX-BOG was schedule to depart at 14:10 and departed at 19:53 due to maintenance problems with the aircraft...

I am not familiar with many Airbus' systems but having to shut down both engines is very very unlikely. Having to tow the aircraft off the runway seems more like a problem with hydraulics which could have affected the nosewheel steering system from operating normally.

On a twin engine, if you have one out and the other starts to give you trouble, you'd rather having it burn down entirely rather than shutting it off.

Have seen 2 incidents like above and we had to go out to the runway with a tug and bring them back to the gate for de boarding.....

Maintenance issues damaged PTU -Power Transfer Unit- and there was no plane for switch.

Still no info about it, there´s no maintenance issues logged, i´ll check tomorrow to get more info.

Ok, this is what I was told by the mechanics. It landed on 28R and the #1 thrust reverser got stuck in the open position. The pilots tried to shut it down and it flamed out. Then #2 flamed out also. The story was the plane only has 2200 pounds of fuel on board. They flew up five Mexicana mechanics to fix this bird.

Almost 1 ton of fuel, it´s enough for a go around or even the alternate, it was an A319 -for what i heard N882MX- maybe it has to do something with the reverses, i´ll check tomorrow for more details.
