Viability Of Flights From London Southend (SEN)

My home town of Southend has an airport which isn't particularly busy, but I was surprised to learn that at one point, it was the 4th busiest airport in the country. What are the possibilities of the airport handling any more traffic than the current weekly Jersey flight by Flybe?

What airlines would do well there- small commuter airlines such as VLM or larger low cost services such as Easyjet or Ryanair?

Is the busy status not down to the high number of a/c that stage through on their journeys to new operators and for repaints?

Southend used to be busy 40 years ago when Channel Airways and Aviation Traders were based there, but that was then!

I would suggest that Southend is too near Stanstead for any serious operations to take place.

"London Southend"?! You must be havin a larf. It's just Southend (or "Sarfend"), claiming it legitimately serves London is like saying PHL serves the five boroughs of NYC.

Here's a link to a similar discussion I started a few weeks ago. I also live in Southend and would love the airport to expand with the likes of FlyBE, Eastern Airways, VLM, KLM Cityhopper etc.

Easyjet & Ryanair's aircraft are too large for the runway for commercial flights, so the airport is restricted to propeller aircraft instead.

I would disagree...
It is not that much further than any of the main international airports for London... Times taken from the AA

Heathrow Airport (T4) Central London 47 Minutes
London Gatwick Airport - Central London 1 hour 8 Minutes
London Luton Airport - Central London 1 hour 12 Minutes
London Stansted Airport - Central London 1 hour 12 Minutes
London Southend Airport - Central London 1 hour 25 Minutes
London Manston Airport - Central London 2 Hours 5 Minutes

As for New York, it has taken me 1 1/2 hours to get from the airport to the city from JFK before... and it's a journey of atleast 50 minutes!


My mother used to be a FA based out of SEN for BAF and they had an extremely diverse timetable from there. JAT, KLM, Air France, British Midland + a few others had routes out of SEN too.

Theres potential at SEN for a regional operator - be it on a low cost basis with Flybe and/or with a more business orientated airline like Eastern or VLM. Just have to hope someone exploits it. One key factor though will be the building of the airport railway station. That will offer quick links to the Docklands and Central London and make SEN more appealing to airlines and passengers
