Satirical (somewhat) Russian Aviation Article

Wed Sep 13, 2006 8:26 am

Below is a link to a somewhat satirical article on flying in Russia today. Parts of it are meant as a rude joke or to elicit a reaction, and some parts are quite true (the internet cafe at Sheremetyevo for instance), and still others are exaggerations or simply untrue. Anyway, I didn't write it!

Having flown in Russia relatively recently, a fair amount, I can attest to some of the absurdities, and there is a very real problem with the (lack) of safety culture on the part of some sectors of aviation.

Article is 100% BS, not worth anyone's time. Going to Russia regularly, and living there a few months of every year, I have never experienced anything of that sort. Not even close.

Been to SVO lately? The security is more tough in that airport than ANY other airport I have seen. And I mean EVER. Before check-in, all my luggage is scanned AND hand-searched. Even luggage which I'm about to check-in is opened and the security personnel goes through it all. Before boarding, as in all airports, hand luggage is also searched entirely. I have never run into any problems in Russian airports. Actually I've always been surprised at it's efficiency.

If you read the press reports from even the state news agency (RIAN), various government officials acknowledge problems with aviation oversight. I haven't been to SVO or DME since mid-2004, when I moved back to the US after living in Moscow for several years, and witnessed many things at airports that were simply terrible (bribes, flagrant safety violations, incredible rudeness [for which Russia does not have a monopoly on], etc.). The "article" is obviously meant to be silly, but I can see how you feel insulted. Obviously, I wouldn't have flown as much as I did internally if I truly felt unsafe.
