FRANKFURT, Germany (Sept. 12, 2006) -- Lufthansa Cargo and World Airways have signed a one-year contract to operate two MD-11 freighters between Europe and the United States. Service will start with the winter schedule 2006, effective at the end of October.
“World Airways has had a relationship with Lufthansa Cargo for more than 20 years and we are very pleased to be working with them again,” said Rob Binns, chief marketing officer of World Air Holdings, Inc. “Lufthansa Cargo is a leading international carrier with an impeccable reputation – and World Airways is proud to be one of Lufthansa Cargo´s partners in providing excellent service for their customers.”
Bernhard Kindelbacher, senior vice president, Product and Network Development of Lufthansa Cargo, added, “We have chosen World Airways, as they have proven to be a very professional and reliable cargo carrier. We are very much looking forward to a close and trustful cooperation for the benefit of our worldwide customers.”

Lufthansa Cargo operates 19 MD-11 freighters and currently has additional charter agreements for two MD-11 freighters and two Boeing 747 freighters.

What I don´t understand is will World getting 2 MD 11s from LH or will World fly for LH Cargo ?
A German aviation site reports that World will get two MD 11s from LH but if I read the article above it seemsto me that World will fly for LH.

Looks like LCAG is short on aircraft, or else they would not operate all those ACMIs.

World will operate 2 MD-11F's for LH. One of them will be the aircraft currently being converted to a freighter.

Is the other one coming off of EVA Air or Air Canada? There are 5 -Fs now, not counting the one that will be converted. The Air Canada contract for 2 aircraft was to run through August 2007, and the EVA contract for 3 aircraft was supposed to run through at least March 2007.

Hmmmm....

Also, I'm wondering what ever happened to the 2 DC10s that were doing Menlo. At least one still seems to be counted in the "active" fleet as of the last 10Q. I thought that I read somewhere that one might be going to do some cargo work for Air France, but there hasn't been a press release about it.

The DC10's have done some flying for AF- but good question about where the second MD-11F is coming from. N279WA will be one, who knows what the other will be.

I heard 275...

But I'm curious as to how that will work out.

...will replace the 2 M1F's currently leased from Gemini Air!
I would assume.

LH Cargo has had an ACMI deal for 2 years with Gemini, they aren't satisfied with the mechanical reliability of Gemini so now they are giving World Airways a go. One of the services that World will fly is BRU-JFK-BRU 5 times a week and CGN-EMA-JFK-EMA-CGN 5 times a week
Zanair flight, please hold on finals as we have to clear rhino's off the runway. Next flight KUL-FRA-AMS Flown in A319,A

N279WA has at the moment a Pax interrior... but she would be converted to a freighter.

I had understood that she was in for conversion already. If she isn't, I don't see how she's going to be ready to begin freighter service at the end of October.

I was wondering one thing, given that WO does lots of charters for the AMC and for civilian airlines (PAX and cargo): wouldn't it perhaps be convenient to convert the full PAX MD-11s they have into -CFs (Convertible Freighters)? MP has about 4 -CFs, which allows them full flexibility, although now they'll fly as freighters only. So why doesn't WO have their aircraft converted to -CFs, so they can switch for PAX to cargo in a short time, should they have any shortages in aircraft?

World already had 2 MD-11CF's. N275WA and N276WA were both converted over to pure freighter several years ago. The payload penalties on an MD-11CF operating as a freighter makes it very noncompetitive with a normal MD-11F. The changeover from pax to cargo and v/v is not something that can be completed overnight and has to be accomplished at a full service maintenance facility with all of the materials on hand ahead of time.

FI642 is well aware of this bird....and by the way, it doesn't have a pax interior at the moment.

I see. Thanks for the explanation, Ed.

Ed got the answer, and he's one to know. Bottom line is that it's a nice idea in theory, but in practice the penalties outweigh the benefits of the limited flexibility that convertability offers.

Quoting INTENSS (Reply 14):
Almost done. (The conversion of 279.)

Thanks for the confirmation!

I'm still wondering where the second aircraft is coming from, and why it is suddenly available, insofar as Air Canada and Eva were supposed to be using all 5 a/c into 2007 and beyond. Unless it's going to be a DC10, but that's not what the release says.
