Additional Delta LAX Flights

Thu Sep 14, 2006 3:45 am

DL announced new nonstops from LAX to PVR (already known) and MGA (new), as well as increased LAX-GUA service:

LAX-PVR will be daily effective 12/15
LAX-MGA will be 2x weekly effective 12/16
LAX-GUA starts 12/15 (previously announced) and will increase from 1x weekly to 4x weekly

Hopefully this is a sign that Delta's LAX buildup is going according to plan.

Good news. I also found this interesting, which was noted in the article:

From Los Angeles, Delta offers 281 weekly flights to 17 nonstop destinations, including long-haul domestic flights to Atlanta, New York-JFK, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, Hartford, Columbus, Ohio, Cincinnati and Raleigh-Durham; international flights to Guadalajara, Cancun and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo; and Hawaii service to Honolulu and Maui. With this winter's expansion, Delta plans to offer 437 weekly flights to 35 destinations from Los Angeles by March 2007.

I think this is including destinations that have been announced, but not yet started and thus not reflected in the list above. These include:

Puerto Vallarta
Guatemala City
Liberia
Managua
La Paz
Acapulco
Loreto
Mazatlan
Culiacan
Manzanillo
Zacatecas
Hermosillo
Torreon
Las Vegas
San Francisco
Sacramento
Oakland
San Jose, CA

So that brings us to our 35 destinations announced. Nevertheless, quite a build-up, and a sign of confidence in LAX. As mentioned above, things must be going well.

Well, it's a little too early to tell at this point in the game..the LAX buildup is only in its infancy. LAX-GUA is showing promise, as initial bookings have been pretty strong (no surprise though given that the flight is starting during the holiday season), thus justifying the increase in frequencies. The once-weekly LAX-LIR has been a little tougher....

Agreed, the jury will be out for a while, especially with a Mexico RJ flying which has proven difficult for others before.

At least 4x weekly LAX-GUA is more respectable then the previously announced single weekly service.
But then again as you mention they are starting in the middle of the peak season so selling should not be too difficult!

LAX-MGA is an interesting choice as its a market that has not been tried by a US carrier and one that is only operated by TACA itself seasonally at a very low frequency.

The Guancaste Coast of Costa Rica is growing very fast for tourism with many exclusive resorts. While I can see this flight being a success DL needs to get out and advertise it, and at the very least offer its flights as part of vacation packages which different whole sellers offer.

On a related note, I hear the hearing about DL's LAX terminal leases are due by the end of October, unless of the parties reach a settlement prior.

Ha, I knew DL would increase frequencies on that route fast Big grin , just didn't think it would be this fast. Certainly good news. Now, the main question is: Do terminals 5 and 6 have dual-language signage with English and Spanish? They no have it throughout ATL, and with this expansion at LAX, it would certainly be a welcome addition if they don't have it already.

No. Suprising for a city whose population is 50% Latino/Hispanic.

DL should be free to install them in T-5 as long as they retain the lease. T-6 is managed by the city with CO,DL and UA being tenants. I doubt others would be interesting in contributing to new dual language signage.

Its about damn time... this is gonna be a money maker. They can easily fill up a 738... there were strong rumours about UA continuing their SAL route to MGA, but the planes were normally full... Great news for LAX, DL and especially MGA... Awesome! I only hope the 2 days arent the same TA flies in high season!  Wink

By the way... anybody know what equipment they plan to use?

Is there any Spanish signage at the airport at all? Definitely would be something that the airport could do with, especially given that other carriers also have sizeable operations to Mexico from LAX.

DL plans Thu/Sat, while TACA does Mon/Thu from LAX.

B757. Looks to share the same equipment on days GUA does not operate.

Will be interesting how MGA works out as no one on this side of the border has tried it before from LAX. Even TACA whom offers multiple daily flights prefers to serve Nicaragua via connection service sans the limited seasonal nonstop service.

Also it be interesting to see if DL manages to crack the LA Latino/Hispanic travel agency cartels. Only a few agencies dominate sales via reselling to lots of other smaller agencies. These large companies have extremely strong preferential business links with carriers such as TACA, United, AA, Mexicana.

Quoting DAL767400ER (Reply 10):

Yes, TBIT and AA's T-4 have some. Since majority of the terminals are run by individual airlines its up to them to furnish the facilities according.

The airport does not parse have standard signage format thru out however.

TA could easily run a daily A319. I talked to a TA agent the other day and they mentioned they rather run the A320 and only in certain days because it normally goes out full and the equipment is needed for a 2nd/3rd SAL flight.

In the press release the wording states the schedule from LAX-GUA is 4x per week but farther down in press release where the times are it states it is a daily service. Which is it?

Anybody else notice this???

Wow ... I like the way DL building up LAX. Great idea to use as LAX as LatAm Gateway. I know DL is having a hard time with the loads on the ATL - BZE flt. But it would be nice to see/try a BZE x2 weekly out of LAX. A large population of Belizeans live in and around the L.A. area most have to use TA to SAL and overnight to BZE the following morning or use CO to IAH.
Belize my home sweet home...

Indeed, much more reasonable... LAX-GUA has a great demand year-round, not to mention the holiday season! But they better start promoting it more aggressively, as I haven't heard anything here about this new flight...

And to top it all of, RWY 25L is closed down and torn up, so that really increases taxi time on both the North and South Complexes. Always nice to come in from ATL on 24R and taxi all the way around to T5. So with the construction going on it is not helping DL or any other airlines on the South side.
