DTW Weather Diversions 9-13 -06?

Thu Sep 14, 2006 6:10 am

There have been some very strong storms over the Detroit Area all afternoon since about 2pm. I was looking at Flightaware around 5pm and noticed a handful of flights in holding patterns west of Toledo, and in the thumb area of Michigan.

Looks like a Mesaba flight from TVC diverted to TOL. These storms don't seem like they are moving out of the area either as I still hear almost constant thunder. There may be more diversions soon like to TOL and FNT or MBS if this weather doesn't let up.

As of right now, the weather is breaking up. However, their is still some heavy weather in the area. I think DTW is open right now. However, radar is showing a storm about 5 miles north/northwest of the airport. And they are moving to the West. So expect long delays in DTW tonight

Not sure if I read right but it looks like an A320 out of DCA, and a CRJ out of CRL diverted to TOL.

Not sure where the DC-9 from ORD went. It was circling in the thumb area around Sanilac and was heading west, then there is no sign of it now on Flight Aware - it may have gone to MBS or FNT.

Wow, that'd be great to see an A330 head into TOL, or imagine the sight of that coming over top of I-75 into FNT.

Anybody know why they don't seem to utilize LAN for diversions?

I believe this leaves the 757-300 as the last Northwest aircraft to have yet go into TOL.

TOL is typically the primary diversion point for NW...they have made good use of the BAX ramp during a few events.  Smile Not to mention during the Blackout when I want to say they sent 10-15 aircraft into there.

Most of the diversions photos are posted on that site...since its mostly TOL people there.  Smile

I ran out to the airport and saw the A330 (N805NW) firing up, I parked at the rental car lot to snap a few pics and don't you know my camera batteries went dead. I am so mad! It was awesome to see the A330 here in TOL and go roaring down 25! I hope someone got some good pictures.

Doesn't that figure. LOL I've checked around I don't think anyone got any...but maybe I'll be shocked. I just need to move back...oh wait, tried that once. Nevermind.  Smile

Unfortunately you have to register to get on that site.

I remember back in 2002 when DTW had a week of slow moving thunderstorms, TOL was getting a lot of diversions as a couple Northwest 744s and DC-10s went there and the airport website had photos.

Oh I so miss the awesome thunder storms Michigan has, especially over summer. When working at a kids camp from June-August I once stayed awake all night and watched a thunder storm, yea I was pretty much smashed the next day......never drunk so much coffee in a day

After living in Florida for four summers, Michigan storms don't look all that impressive anymore when I go back up to Michigan. I actually been up in Michigan for a month and this storm the other day was the first one at least in the Detroit area that was anything special - and it was more like a Florida storm (basically a convection/pop up storm). I watched it form and knew it was going to become a storm before it started raining or thundering. It formed right along I-275 and rapidly expanded and sat still. There was a big downburst in the middle of the storm and a lot of really close lightning strikes - also typical of a Florida storm.

I lived by both Daytona Beach and Orlando Airport when I lived in Florida. I remember there were some big storms over Miami one day and we got some great diversions to Orlando - a lot of AA flights, we got 767s and 777s from AA, where our usual largest AA flights are a couple A300s and 757s. We also got a Virgin Atlantic Flight.

At Daytona, on several occassions we got some diversions but we usually only handled planes from the carriers that flew to DAB, which were Delta, Continental and United Express - we got a couple Chatauqua Delta Connection flights (where we only got Comair and ASA for Delta Connection), so it was nice to see Delta ERJs at DAB, and we got a Ted flight though.
