JFK T-6 Temp Gates For Temp Gate Pax Only?

Thu Sep 14, 2006 6:48 am

I was flying out of JFK on B6 this past Thursday and I had some time so I decided to check out the new temp terminal. However I decided not to when I saw someone (I assume a Jetblue employee), checking boarding passes, I assume to see if your flight was scheduled to depart the temp gates. Is there that many people who want to check out the temp terminal that they have to limit it to people with flights operating out of the temp gates?

I'm not sure. However, at DFW's AmEagle Satillite Terminal(closed now), they did a boarding pass check, but let me go out there despite I wasn't departing out of there. I've also done it at LAX and LAS. Just tell the agent you just want to check out the terminal. They will usually let you through.

I think a lot of those checks are to as much about helping out people who are a little confused as they are about keeping people who know what they are doing but don't have a legitimate reason to get on the bus. With respect to the Terminal 2 to Concourse C bus run by UA at ORD, telling the agent I want to eat or spot in T-1 even when holding a NW bp has always been fine.

Yes, they are checking boarding passes to make sure you have a vaild reason to head over to the temp gates, if not they will not let you through.

Do you know why this is, WMUPilot? I was able to make it out there with a non-valid boarding pass but I had to BS my way through (I figured I wasn't breaking any laws, so no harm done). I said that I was meeting a friend at a gate in that facility and the lady let me go. BTW, it did not appear to be a JetBlue employee checking my boarding pass, but somebody from a private security company.

I'm guessing they just don't want hundreds of people burdening the facilities, including the bus link (even though I had the bus to myself on the way out to the terminal). The temp space is not small but clearly having hundreds of people out at the gates could cause some issues. I was also impressed with the number of bathroom fixtures provided - I realize this is a bizarre thing to mention and probably something everybody takes for granted, but I have noticed that T6 bathrooms are incredibly overwhelmed with all the passengers JetBlue pushes through that facility. The lack of adequate bathroom facilities is also an issue at most of the older terminals at JFK, but none more than JetBlue's terminal which clearly wasn't designed to handle the number of people flowing through that place! (I am always thankful I am a guy when using the bathroom at JFK!)

I just flew through there today and I wish I had checked here before hand as I would have asked. I'm assuming it is for the same reason TSA isn't allowing non-ticketed passengers through the checkpoints. The less amount of customers that you have to watch, the easier it is to watch them and the easier it is to spot those who are thinking about causing problems.

I fly through JFK tomorrow on my way up to BUF, and if I arrive into the trailer park (not very likely) I will try and ask. We joke about it, internally by calling it a trailer park (essentially it's a bunch on modular homes) but in all reality it is very nice, Spacious and plenty of seating. I really don't care for it as it looks like the waiting room of a mental institution (some place I may end up  Silly ) and hence why I bid to avoid JFK.

I was actually thinking about this very thing as I made my way back over to the temp gates from the main terminal. There was a larger man checking tickets, but as you boarded the bus to head over, there was this real petite young lady watching customers board, now how is she going to stop a bunch of guys that go tearing across the tarmack? Hopefully that won't ever happen, but it's food for thought.

Well, not for nothing, but what exactly would a bunch of guys do if they went "tearing across the tarmac"? Steal a belt loader? One call to the authorities and I doubt anybody would get very far... at worst they'd injure themselves. You could probably do more damage hijacking the bus - but I am sure even then the risks are huge with minimal gain (from a terrorists point of view).

There are rules that the PANYNJ has for allowing people onto the AOA, which includes needing a valid reason to do so. In our case, the only reason for us to have customers go onto the AOA right now is to go over to the remote gates. I am not sure of the logistics of everything, but typically you can only "escort" 5 people on your SIDA badge so that could be why they have an extra person on the bus...for legality issues.

Anyone with the PANYNJ that can shed some additional light on the agreements in place to move customers from T6 to the remote gates?
