Air Canada To Lay Off 300

Thu Sep 14, 2006 7:46 pm

I just heard on the morning news that Air Canada, Canada's largest carrier will cut 300 jobs for the fall season. They did mention that most, if not all people will be subject to recall when traffic picks up during the winter. The cuts include 203 airport agents and 100 call centre jobs. Most of these jobs will be cut in Toronto, although they did say they are country wide.

Here is an article I found online:

So recently I was under the understanding that Air Canada has turned around and is now making profits. Is this a measure to keep making profits or is this bad news? Your thoughts?

There was a thread on this topic on Monday "AC Announces Layoffs At Airports And Call Centres". It got 9 replies.

It is a measure to make profits and is bad news for the employees being laid-off.

I don't see this as being inconsistent with turn-around, it is typical seasonal traffic fluctuations. AC has not yet had luck turning a profit in all 4 quarters of the year, so it would seem layoffs are necessary in the slower periods.
