Well the worst I can think of was some years ago when my girlfriend and I were returning home to Amsterdam from a vacation in Costa Rica via Miami. We were packed like sardines aboard a very tired looking (but flawlessly operated by the cabin crew) Martinair B 767 for the final 12 hour leg when we started bouncing.

This in itself was not horrific, however it got progressively worse to the point when the crew had to be seated and strapped in, the pilot climbed twice in the space of an hour to other flight levels, but to almost no avail. We dropped once significantly, or so it felt, and stuff was flying around the floors and in the over head bins. Again, none of this was overly serious but it lasted for HOURS ! I needed to use the bathroom, as I am sure did many others but neither we nor the crew were permitted to leave our seats. To top it all off, it was three days after the Iraqi ground war began so security / tensions were very high in Miami and on the plane, and my girlfriend was terrified. I held her hand all the time and with each bigger bounce she squeezed mine hard, so much so and with enough grip that her nails broke the skin on my palm and drew tiny spots of blood.

Needless to say it eventually cleared up, and nothing was wrong. But I can tell you I have never seen such a run for the toilettes in my life, and I think the passengers sucked the bar dry from stress.

oh please let there never be cell phones in airliners...

Well my turbulent trip was from Doha to Dubai on QR A300 last year.

I was just one minute late to checkin for my boarding pass. After argueing a lot we were given our economy tickets. The sky was already yellow and black (it was 12 in the afternoon!). When we sat down in the plane still on the ground, there was one of the worst sandstorms followed by a thunderstorm. Still on the ground, the wings shook like hell, and the plane appeared to be pushed back and forth.

After two hours, things started to calm down but nevertheless the same. The pilot announced that we would take off. I swear to God, the plane took off like a rocket, and as soon as we were airbourne, the plane banked to the right and dropped up and down like a tsunami wave. People were screaming, but THANK GOD it was only a 45 minute flight. Men's GHUTRA'S (head dresses) were falling. Of course no meal was served at all until we landed!
