Two Killed In Helicopter Crash, Not Far From Here.

Thu Sep 14, 2006 11:39 pm

Just noticed on the news that two people were killed about half an hour ago when their helicopter crashed at Voss, in Norway. This is not very far from the airport I work at, and the helicopter company "Airlift" based here have several helicopters operating in those areas. None of their helicopters left from here, but it looks like the aircraft belonged to the same company...

The helicopter was working on a ski-lift at the local skiing facilities at Voss.

More info will follow.

Update:

The helicopter crashed just before 4PM local time, in the skitrack Bavallen, Voss, not too far from Bergen. The helicopter was lifting material to be used during the construction of a new ski lift, when the accident occured. It is still not clear what caused the accident.

Eyewitnesses say the helicopter dropped from a high altitude, spun round twice, before hitting the ground between two residential homes.

From the pictures I'm still unable to work out the reg of the aircraft, but it appears to be from the company "Helitrans".

I don't mean to sound mean and obviously this is a sad tragedy, but what's with the title of this thread?
From where I am, Voss IS quite far from here.
None shall pass!!!!

Ah, should perhaps have pointed out that I work in Førde... which isn't too far from here. Didn't mean to say it happened next door or anything, so sorry if the title was misleading.

I think the point is, 'here' depends where the reader of the thread title is actually situated...by definition, 'not far from here' is going to be patently untrue for a huge proportion (in this case, the majority I imagine!) of the site's readership since everyone is dotted all over the world  Smile Thus the second part of the title is meaningless/confusing.

In context though, not a big deal...a shame for all involved in the crash  Sad

Operated by Airlift.

Not to sound too critical...but with their history, does it really surprise you? Airlift has more than their share of helicopters falling out of the sky.

14OCT1996: LN-OPR. 4 dead after hitting power lines
24APR1998: LN-OPX. 1 dead, 2 injured after losing control in fog/snow
06NOV1999: LN-OCF. 2 dead, 2 injured after engine failure
19AUG2002: LN-OPT. No injuries. Helicopter damaged during loading
18DEC2003: LN-OLK. 2 injured after losing control and hitting the ice
21JUL2005: LN-OPV. No injuries. Helicopter damaged after pilot hit container on ground
29AUG2005: LN-OPI. No injuries. Emergency landing after engine failure

As these accident reports show, Airlift seems to have a high amount of accidents compared to other operators of helicopters.
