Lufthansa First A380 Delayed From Jan-> Summer '08

Fri Sep 15, 2006 7:54 pm

Lufthansa said it won't get its first superjumbo until the summer of 2008, rather than January of that year as expected.

Now, Lufthansa has only been assured of getting one plane in 2008, Stefan
Schaffrath, a spokesman, said in a telephone interview today.

He declined to give a month for the delivery or the start of operations, saying only it would be in the "summer.''

"We'll still be the first in Europe to use the A380,'' Schaffrath said.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions, such as Turner was right, the article dates from september 4th.

Also,
"The carrier, Europe's second-biggest, after Air France-KLM Group, had originally expected to receive the first of 15 A380s on order at the end of 2007."

Looks to me in line, with the 6 month delay announced 3 months ago. LH expects to take delivery, roughly half a year later than planned.

(the end of 2007 includes 31/12/07 and the summer of 2008 starts at 21/06/08)

So what sorta route does an airline use just one plane on? I imagine using one aircraft on a long haul route will be very inefficient in terms of staffing.

For instance, say LH 738 flies the A380 FRA to HKG on Monday. On Tuesday,LH 738 flies the route using a 747. Tuesday, LH 739 flies the 380 back to FRA with a fresh 380 crew while Monday's crew continues its layover. On Wednesday LH 738 flies the 380 back to HKG with a fresh 380 crew. On Thursday, LH 739 flies the 380 back to FRA with Monday's 380 crew. On Friday LH 738 goes out with Tuesday's crew and the cycle repeats. Meanwhile the same cycle is repeating with the 747 crew. So it looks like an extra crew is required to maintain the route with only one jet and the airline is forced to give the crew a layover with an extra day.

Can the cabin crew switch between A380s and 747s or is the entire crew dedicated to only one aircraft type?

Is such a staffing issue a problem for an airline?

So, apart from SQ, QF and EK, who else is slated to receive 380's in 2007?

I definitely think that should be possible.....of course, pilots will not be able to switch.....

Just about any trans-Atlantic route they feel could use the A380. Most likely JFK.

LH is NOT a member of KrisFlyer.
While it is correct that KrisFlyer members can accrue and redeem mileage on LH flights, LH maintains its own FF program "Miles & More".

In the case of LH, probably FRA-ORD or FRA-IAD.

It's looking like only SQ have a good chance of receiving any WhaleJets in 2007.

I don't think I can as I am not a first Class Member. But if you send me a blank e-mail through my profile I will reply immediately.
