Who Are The Regulars With 747-300s In Service?

Fri Sep 15, 2006 10:33 pm

I flew today SYD-PER on a QF 747-300. I have a real soft spot for the 743. I remember when it was introduced into service in the 1980s it was such a big deal as the upper deck was so much larger. (I think SIA called it BigTop) At that time it was a flagship for QF and I loved spotting one in Brisbane. I think QF introduced its new livery with the big red tail on this bird in 1984... (or was it on the 762?) Qantas seem to have hung on to the 743s, they are now regulars on the transcontinental flights to Perth - (and I think to Japan, HNL and Mumbai...) Anyhow, despite the malfunctioning AVOD and worn interior, it was such a treat to sit in 1B today and enjoy this venerable ship.

Who are the other majors with 743s still in service? JAL? Thai?

Any info about their future would be interesting as well.

PIA are still using them regularly and Air India have 2 combi's in service.

Air Atlanta Iclandic operate them too.

Saudi Arabian Airlines still have some in service.

TAAG Angola have 3 or so.

There are a few in storage (or were) at JNB that were ex-SAA machines.

Corsair are still using them.

Dragonair are now using them as freighters.

Have a look here for any more :-

AI has two 743 combis, in service since 1988.....they are used mainly on the BOM-DEL-NRT route and sadly, will be retired in 2007 when the new 777's come into the fleet.....

I enjoyed several flights on these two planes.....loved them more than the 744's...

743 was launch by SWISSAIR for use primarily to the USA, they ordered 5. They also had a route from Zurich to Mumbai to Hong Kong with them. What a great airplane, without it there wold have benn no -400, an even better bird.

Are TG, AI and Air Pullmantur using newer engines on their 743 aircraft? I always wondered about their engines as they are not the original engines used on the 743 but look rather similar to the engines used on the 744 (?)

Quoting A388 (Reply 14):
Are TG, AI and Air Pullmantur using newer engines on their 743 aircraft?

TG and AI took delivery of fresh aircraft from the factory. Boeing at the time was offering the B743 with PW JT9D-7R4G2, RR RB211.524D4 and both the CF6-50E2 and the new CF6-80C2B1 options. The latter GE engine with minor modifications (FADEC) was also one of the options for the B744 launched shortly thereafter with the variant being known as the CF6-80C2B1F. Externally both the CF6-80C2B1F & CF6-80C2B1 looked identical and therefore the impression (quite correctly too) that the B743 of AI and TG had newer engines that were standard on the B744 as well. While TG opted to continue with the GE engines on the B744s that followed, AI reverted back to PWs for their B744s.

Air Pullmantur's B747-300 EC-IOO has a more colorful career having served several airlines since its delivery to Varig in 1988. This aircraft served with Air Atlanta Icelandic as TF-ATH and through them operated for Iberia as well under the same regn before going back to Air Atlanta Icelandic. In 2003 it came to Air Pullmantur with CF6-80C2B6 engines through a lease by Ansett Worldwide and continues to be in service with them.

Thank you for the extensive explanation Vimanav. I knew there was something different to those engines on the 743s of TG, AI and Air Pullmantur.

The last ones were used from ORY to PTP, FDF and RUN.

The 4 Air France B743 have been now retired from service.

F-BTDG & F-BTDH are stored at XCR and will eventually be scrapped.
F-GETA & F-GETB are stored at ORY

They were previously based at ORY and used to FDF and PTP but NOT to RUN.
B742 were used to RUN, later replaced by B744.
The B773ER will replace the B744 on ORY-RUN starting next February 2007.

I saw them parked at ORY completely painted in white (without AF names and logo on tail). Do you have any idea where they will go and what will happen to them ?

And, another question for you FlySSC, AF usually operated from may to sept a daily rotation ORY-AJA with the B743. Do you know if they will continue this rotation with one of the new B773ER or with a B744 based at ORY ? It was always my flight of choice to go to AJA and I hope they will continue. bouncy

They've been painted all white for a while now ... actually they were still operating some AF flights without the AF colors.
I heard they've been sold and will leave soon somewhere to the U.S but I don't have any confirmation whether they've been bought by a U.S airline, which I really doubt, or a lessor or broker, or to be scrapped.

There should be no more B744 based at ORY next summer 2007. Only B773ER for the flights to FDF/PTP/RUN and 1 A343 for the Daily flight to CAY.
I am not sure if the B773ER can be operated to/from AJA ... but I'll ask !!!

And the only freighters in their fleet are -400ERF models. In fact they never operated -300s as dedicated freighters, they were all 300M models.

We (QF) dont have AVOD on our 743 fleet. It is purely Total entertainment config only.

We are the only Airline (QF) that have reconfig the 747-300...so if you think ours is worn, wait till you fly on another Airlines 743.

Hope that is of some info.

Cheers
