Ipoh Airport Runway Too Short For AirAsia?

Sat Sep 16, 2006 1:54 pm

According to this headline AirAsia is suspending service to Sultan Azlan Shah Airport:

My questions are:

How does an airline provide service for several months before deciding a runway is too short?

And,

Shouldn't their due diligence have caught such a condition before they even attempt to offer service?

The only way that comes to mind is that the airport was marginal to begin with and the airline just took a chance that they can do their operations there.

Can anyone please enlighten me?

Thanks.

Quoting Calags (Thread starter):

Did AirAsia bring in a A320 right from the beginning? The article in Star could be interpreted in a other way ...
"The reason is that the runway at the airport cannot accommodate the newly acquired A320 Airbus. "

And why is a 1,798m (5,898ft) runway at an elevation of 130ft too short for operating a A320 ? Sectors out of IPH aren't that long ...

Then how in the world did MAS fly out from there using the 737?

That seems to imply Air Asia no longer has any more B737-300s (which "could" land in Ipoh), all phased out and replaced by A320! Or is this another sorry excuse for Air Asia?
