Bizjets To Fly YYC-YEG On A Sched Basis.

Sun Sep 17, 2006 4:15 am

Wonder how well this will go over???Sounds like a local company is planning on flying a Lear 45 in a Executive setup between YYC-YEG.The flights will operate out of a FBO at each point to avoid lineups and security delays and will also feature free shuttle service to the passengers desired destination in each city. The service will be catered to buisness folk...I was sure I heard it was sunwest home aviation planning this but I will confirm this once I find out who it is.

Interesting concept, I've always wondered if something like this could work in on certain routes. I have a feeling it will flop, but I hope it does well!

Any idea on the cost of a ticket, and the schedules?

Very interesting concept, that is why I posted it.Not sure on cost as I believe it is still being planned. With the way buisness is going in this province it could possibly do well. With the nasty Alberta winter coming I am sure flying would be more akin to the buisness people not wanting to drive the highway...And with everyone else flying through the main terminals in each city it could reduce travel times alot.

Well this is nothing new... Tradewind and Linear Air both offer scheduled charter service from TEB/NYC to MVY/ACK etc on corporate configured Caravans, Pilatuses, etc... These guys seem to be doing pretty well.

I was always curious as to why regionals never dabbled in flying Globals or G-V's with standard economy seating in them... Too expensive I presume

If this is going to be non-scheduled service on corporate sized planes, wouldn't it make more sense to fly into YXD rather than YEG? I can't imagine the types who need a corporate jet for a 30 minute flight being too pleased with the 45 minute drive into town that follows it!

There have been mixed results. Indigo used Falcon-20s between Midway and Teterboro and eventually failed. EJM has toyed with a similar idea using its managed fleet, actually seeking government approval but I believe it's on hold. IIRC, there was a European operator also using Lear 45s between France, Switzerland and the UK that subsequently shelved those plans also. It could prove a good way to increase utilization but a careful balance has to be considered with increase usage issues with regard to maintenance, crew and insurance expenses.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

I would really like to know where some people get the 45 minute drive from???I do the route in 15 minutes and I live in the westend of city. The partially opened anthony henday is to thank for that.Drive times to downtown are done in 30 minutes (with traffic). And I dont speed....Well maybe sometimes... Wink

Ok, I admit I usually get lost on the way into town - but 30 minutes is about the quickest I have done the drive from the Sheraton to YEG, and that too was at 5am with nothing else on the road.

I also only see this working if YXD is used.

I frequently fly to YEG and it can take me up to an hour to get from YEG to NW Edmonton (Spruce Grove area). I'm forever amazed that the YEG airport is so damn far away from the city fringes, let alone the city.

No doubt YYC-YEG traffic growth is held back by the long commute from YEG to the city of Edmonton.

I'm sure execs would pay a premium for YXD access. The question is whether there is a business case. If the Learjet 45 is already financially justified then this service, if it can be scheduled to complement the existing use, could turn a profit perhaps.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

YEG's distance from the Centre, and now with the AHD opening, is very reasonable. I find it no different that DEN or having to sit in traffic trying to get to other airports.

It usually only takes me about 20 minutes to access Sherwood Park, via the Whitemud. With the AHD I assume that will drop even more. Same goes for Spruce Grove.

Interesting they'd choose to operate out of YEG instead of YXD. I don't think they'd have any problems at YXD, since the Learjet 45 seats 8-10 pax - this fits within the current restriction of scheduled flights to have no more than 10 passengers aboard.

Is it possible that that costs like landing fees, etc. might have a factor in them choosing YEG over YXD?

There could be several reasons for this service operating in/out of YEG as compared to YXD:

1) A similar service using YXD already operates, although using turboprop aircraft. That being said, there would be no issues with aircraft performance, or restrictions to passenger loads, operating a Lear 45 to/from YXD
2) Using FBO's instead of the terminals will save alot of time and will make this a more desireable option compared to simply driving the extra 2.5 hours.
3) As Wolsingjet and Flyb have alluded to, the imminent opening of the western Henday extension, and the opening of the eastern extension next year, will make accessing the western and eastern areas of the metro area almost as quick from YEG.
4) Most of the "premium" type of passengers living in Edmonton who will use such a service already live in Southwest Edmonton.
5) Edmonton's corporate offices are not all based in the downtown core. In fact, there are probably more of them in the suburbs as compared to downtown.
