RIC Gets A DL 757 For November

Sun Sep 17, 2006 9:20 am

Yes! It's true! Though it is only for November, Delta will put a 757 on ATL-RIC! The flight will leave from RIC at 740 and the flight from ATL departs at 655. Maybe this flight will do well enough that it might stay?

That is really cool news. There is nothing better than buying your ticket for a shorter domestic hop and seeing you are on a 757. Really a kick ass ride.

This is an excellent update, Evan767, but it looks like we lose our 738s for November. Small sacrifice and well worth it. Is this some sort of test? Perhaps we can keep the 757s for at least part of December as well?

The month of November 2006 will probably mark the longest duration of consistent 757 service RIC has ever seen. The other issue for us spotters is the timing. Tough to get good shots with the arrival so late and the departure so early. Still, its good news!

What's next? Could RIC be deserving of a new DL mainline route? I think it would be a great idea - as long as its to a totally new city that we don't already have service.

Cheers -

Hmm, doubt it. The only possibility would be SLC and that is a very big long shot IMO. Even though that would be awesome. Also, if PHF can get BOS service, then why not RIC?

Well I saw it. What cataclysmic event was supposed to happen? You think I feel CRW can support a 757? not even close.

The route will probably do very well for RIC.

Really? I'd rather have the MD-88 or 738. The ground times are quicker, and for a shorter flight even more important IMO.

Only been questioned once in my lifetime spotting at RIC. That's about 30 years of spotting. I try not to stay in any one place more than an hour.

Wow, nice to see the upgrade to the 757! Didn’t think that would happen for a while… maybe they’ll bring it back in the spring?

I could easily see the 738 doing a morning SLC - UA used to operate a 727 to DEN and from what I remember it was pretty full... As for BOS I think USX has what 3 RJs a day plus B6 has x2 E190s a day thats 350 seats a day which pretty much covers that market.

How is the terminal construction going up there? Finishing any time soon? looks like it will be beautiful once it's totally completed...

Great news for RIC!

Wish DL would consider an MD-80 for ROA. Those RJ's are getting more uncomfortable by the day!

The main terminal construction at RIC is proceeding well and some of the terminal should open before year's end. I am scheduled to tour the new terminal next week during an open house. I hope to be able to photograph and report what I see.

Back in early August, I was informed by someone at RIC.com that the new baggage claim should be open in October and the entire project completed by Spring 2007.

Amen to that, my ORD-CLE and ORD-MSP and MSP-MDW flights on 757s have always been some of the best short flights i've had - especially since they are rarely more than 2/3 full. (ORD-CLE was a 6 am flight, and had maybe 70 people on it. I had my own row.

Good for RIC. DL's 757 are nice too. You'd be surprised where you can fill a 757.

My mother got a sneak peak at the new terminal upstairs and said it looks great. It is very big and "has very high ceilings".

I remember seeing in an Eastern timetable in about 1985, a 757 scheduled on ATL-RIC. I'm from ROC and I used to look at other medium-size markets like RIC to see what size a/c they were getting (something you could sometimes find out in 1980's timetables). Sorry I don't have the timetable in my collection now to give an exact date.

As far as I know, ROC has never had scheduled 757 passenger service from any carrier. Good for RIC, enjoy your 757 in November.

Actually, I'd love to fatten them up a little...maybe an RJ could grow into an MD-80.

Unfortunately, the planes are staying the same size...small and cramped. The other side of the equation is that passengers seem to be getting a bit more...well "size challenged".  crowded

After sitting on one of those RJ's in ATL from 6 PM until I deplaned in ROA at 11 PM, I can tell you first hand it was getting more uncomfortable by the moment.

I used to fly DL 757's all the time out of ORF to ATL and CVG when connecting on my way to and from college in Norfolk. I have to say as much fun as the ride's on the 757's are they are the most uncomfortabe aircraft in Delta's fleet, hands down. I'd take a 145 over the 757 any day I hate to say it.

There was a time when Eastern flew an A300 on a morning flight from RIC to ATL. And on Tuesdays it was an L-1011. I don't know how full they were, because I never flew on that flight.

Evan, you've done good - scooping the local news on this item!

http://timesdispatch.com/servlet/Sat...5&path=%21business&s=1045855934855

I do not ever remember L1011s or A300s here in RIC. Must have been for a short period? Sure would like to find timetables with that info.

I do remember seeing United DC-8 stretch aircraft in the late 70s/early 80s and once saw a Texas International DC-10 (a charter?) in the same time period. This was long before RIC had air bridges. I remember the DC-10 towering over the terminal and adjacent concrete jet blast walls.

The A300s and L-1011s were operating into RIC in 1979 and 1980, but I don't know for how long. I remember the UA DC-8-61 from RIC to IAD, then on to LAX and SFO. I flew on that flight a few times. It was UA 59 in one direction, and UA 54 in the other direction.

Thanks for the dates, L1011. Looks like the RTD had to correct some statements it made in yesterday's article. An airport rep had stated that the 757 was larger than an A300! Today's short article cleared that up and more....

http://timesdispatch.com/servlet/Sat...6&path=%21business&s=1045855934855

I'd like to know the load factors on these L1011 and A300 flights back in the Eastern days. But, I suppose those flights were during the final years of airline regulation and large aircraft on thin routes was commonplace. I wish I'd been able to be on some of those flights - never been on an L1011 or A300.

Hey all, this is my first time here to Airliners.net. I am sort of Old School and have lived here in Richmond for all my life. I know a lot about the history of RIC. Yes, I remember the day well before RIC had jetways. I use to work for one of the legacy carriers a few years back. In fact one of the older guys that I worked with actually worked for "Eastern" back in the day. He told me they flew L1011s all the time into RIC. As for the new terminal, I was returned from a business trip this past weekend and part of the new baggage claim is now open. Looks great. I don't know when the upper ticketing hall will open though. Glad RIC continues to expand.

Will the DL 757 be the largest thing scheduled in there now?

I know FedEx used to operate in A310s and A300s as well as UPS DC-8s but been a while since I've seen anything that large there. Is US still bringing in an A321 every so often as they used to?

I've seen the US A321 occasionally. UPS brings in 757s and an A300 nightly. FedEx brings in a B727 and an A300 nightly as well. The big buggy I have not seen in a while is the Antonov A124 that used to come by to take PhilipMorris product (guess what?) back to mother Russia. Have not seen any DC8s at RIC lately.

Delta's B757 service will be the biggest passenger service at RIC.

A fun source to monitor traffic and aircraft types is flightaware.com. Here's the direct link to RIC traffic: http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KRIC

FlightAware is fantastic for spotters! Its helped me identify aircraft on approach to RIC that flew over my house!

Cheers!

US changed the A321 service to an A320 about a month ago. It came from CLT and RON. I took the A321 several times leaving at 0720 to CLT. Too bad, I loved that plan. It is far more comfortable than USAirway's 757.

Fed Ex still operates a A310. It is scheduled to arrive around 1830-1900ish I believe. I see it pass over the house sometimes in the evening. Can't miss a plane that large with those colors. Also, I noticed UPS had an A300 on the ramp a few weeks ago. I am not sure how long they have used it at RIC.

Any guess which gate DL will try and squeeze their 757 into? B1 will not work and B3 would be very tight. I think either B5 or temporarily use B15, which they have used for RON planes in the past.

It's not a destination, but a term that I think means "Remain Over Night", or something like that.

Correct! Remain Over Night = RON when an aircraft arrives in and is staying in that station then it is "terminating" or better known as a "terminator" and becoming an RON.  Smile
