Why Is US Renumbering Trans-atlantic Flights?

I just got my E-ticket for my trip to Italy this March and It looks like they have renumbered there flights have a look: My Itenerary starts in ABQ on UA CR7 to DEN followed by A321 on US to PHL. Then for the eastbound leg I will be on US 1442 PHL-AMS(762)(previouse number 42)followed by KL 737-800 to MXP after a night in AMS with my uncle who lives there. Then on the way back I will be on US 1403 FCO-PHL(A330)(used to be flight 3. what is it? Like MAD is 1411(used to be 11) CDG is 1427(used to be 27).

When US Airways announced the re-registration of their fleet, they also started changing the flight numbers around.

I noticed the same with the FRA bound flight US93, it is now US1593.

The whole re-numbering thing is the cause of the HP/US merger

It was completed on 9/16/06 and was done to ensure that US Air flight numbers were different than America West flight numbers.
We are but a moment in this vast Universe and when gone we will never have existed.

Just as Vega said, all US Airways East flight numbers were renumbered as to not conflict with "purchaser" America West's flight numbers in the SHARES system... So instead of changing the smaller airlines flight numbers around, they decided it would be easier to renumber the entire east operation (much larger), dumping some storied flight numbers (like US1 PIT-LAX) and all the low numbered, high prestige transatlantic services. Just another case where East gets wiped out by West.

So what, though? Is it really that big a deal? It's not like someone chooses to fly or not fly an airline based on the flight number, unless it's flight 666 or something.

Well an airlines flight 1 and 2 should touch a hub since the 1/2 are usually prestige routes.... not that PHX-ORD is a prestigious route... maybe when they start PHX-NRT...

Give it a couple years...the honey moon will be over, the old East unions will be 100% in charge, and it'll be PSA all over again. Okay...maybe not that bad.  Smile However, the airline truly needs to come to grasp with who they want as their target customer. The Ex-HP people are so Wal-Marted that they just let anything go...where as the US people have been through these mergers numerous times and many other character building events.

Just so the experience of the East can make its way west (not talking upper management...i'm talking those with common sense further down the ladder). Get Mx in house...get Res in house...and actually take pride in your planes. I've heard nightmares of the ex-HP 757s that do Hawaii having to turn around stay in Hawaii for days befores of MX problems - radios breaking, doors not working, flaps not working, gear not retracting, yadda yadda yadda.

Oh well...it'll eventually get fixed, or Doug will be out on his butt and Wall Street will put in a guy from out East again. Personally...I wouldn't mind Lakefield coming back, but he was just there to raise cash for the reorganization which included raising 3rd party money to pool together to purchase HP and the old US and merge them together under the new US Airways Group...Part II.  Smile Of course Gangwal wasn't bad either, he was just shut down at every opportunity by the big bad Wolf who wanted to break unions and sell the operation off - like he always does.

Last thought...I still have to laugh sometimes at the employees who think their company bought the other. Third party money...used to put two hurting companies together to make a stronger one. US had more cash on hand than HP...but that was to keep the airline operating in Chapter 11. HP didn't have enough cash to buy US...and was well on its way to Chapter 11 eventually.

Can we say bitter?  grumpy  As many other threads on this have said, and was said above, this is just to sort things out in the reservation system. Who knows, maybe all the European flights will go back to low numbers again, may be not. UA's Euro flight #'S aren't low.
What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

West has had flight number changes too. Hawaii flights used to be 9xx, recently I've seem them as 0xx. America West Express went from 6xxx to 2xxx.

IIRC 1-699 is west, 700 and up is east, and at some point the express and codeshares take over.

it`s all bs . if anyone thinks this is a merger rather than a take over they are living a pipe dream. america west has taken over usairways. the only thing that is surviving is the usairways name. the call sign will be cactus. the inflight service mirrors that of hp. the a/c config mirrors that of hp as well. our recurrent training mirrors hp. our bell system is mirroring hp. our buy on board mirrors hp. we have boarding videos, we advertise on our tray tables. the gallley pack out was mirrored to hp`s way. which does not work since hp does not have chillers on their airbus a/c and us does. so when i hear an hp f/a asking dp on the crew news sessions in phx why we they are doing every thing the east way i freakin laugh. why because they have to serve a snack basket in first class now . give me a break.
