TU-154 In Newark On Sunday Eve, Sept 17th?

Mon Sep 18, 2006 1:40 pm

This evening, I flew YQB-EWR-TPA on Continental Express Jet/Continental. I landed in EWR from YQB at around 5:45pm and while my ER3 was taxiing to terminal C, I noticed a TU-154 leaving the international arrivals area of terminal B and then park in the cargo area on the north end of the airport near the Kalitta Air 747 freighters. I couldn't get a good look at the plane to read the airline, but it had red stripes under the wing and a red emblem of some sort on the tail. I also saw an Air Burkina Faso 727 parked at terminal B when I landed. They don't seem like regular visitors to EWR. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any pics because my camera broke on my trip. However, I'd be very interested in knowing if any A-netters can fill in the missing details about these unusual visitors to EWR?

Thanks!!!

Perhaps because of the UN General Assembly meeting?

Think of it, wasn't Polish prime minister (or president) visiting the U.S. and going to the U.N. General Assembly ?

FLYTPA

Did you notice what else was on Terminal B parked behind the Polish 154 and the TAP?

I saw something with a large A330/340 size with a red and white tail logo similar to the Finnair one as I was passing on the Turnpike.

I was surprised to learn that production only closed on this aircraft in June 2006. Found it through Wikipedia.

While we're on EWR spotting, august 2nd there was a Pan Am 722w at EWR. Anyone happens to know the registration? Had no luck with this question at nycaviation.com.

I also saw a TU-154 fly over my house just outside of JFK. It was clearly flying out of JFK, though, not EWR. I couldn't make out the markings on it as it was literally *directly* overhead, so all I could see was the underside. But it was on a typical JFK takeoff pattern - so maybe they flew into EWR and then repo'd to JFK for some reason?

I immediately noticed it because it was flying probably 50% lower than most airplanes on that pattern (and I saw the usual gaggle of JetBlue A320's just before and after it). And I noticed the T-tail and the non-western looking engine exhaust tips. I actually commented to my wife "well, there's something you don't see flying out of JFK every day."

Wish I'd had my camera with me.

The Polish TU-154 is now at SWF until the UN session ends.

Cheers

Quoting Spacecadet (Reply 7):

Might have been the Russian IL-62 you saw.

It operates for the Burkina Faso Government and was one of these two:

is the polish TU154 outfitted with extra tanks or something to make it non-stop across the pound? (I'd doubt it).
