Progress On JetBlue's New JFK Terminal

Mon Sep 18, 2006 11:49 pm

This morning, I had to pick up my fiance' from JFK (jetBlue) Terminal 6. While there, I got some photos of the very quick progress they are making constructing the new terminal. Also, you can see the satellite terminal that being used for 7 temporary gates, mainly used for Embraer flights.

Photos are on my blog:

I also have a quick question. What airline was in Terminal 6 before jetBlue? (I know Terminal 5 was TWA)

IIRC before Jetblue completely took over T6 it was shared with HP and UA, who have since both moved over to T7. Prior to the pulldown of TWA at JFK, T6 was used by TWA. I cannot remember exactly when, but TWA consildated all of its ops into T5 sometime in the late 90s.

I was in JFK last Saturday and the progress looked pretty good as stated.

Was Terminal 6 ever home to a version of Pan Am?

National was the original occupant of the building. Not sure if Pan Am used it after the merger and before selling the terminal to TWA.

I was there a week ago today, the current terminal is a bit outdated, but they have done well with it. Its nice, big, good seating, GREAT views.

Cant wait till they open the TWA terminal. To me though, it looks tiny. A lot smaller then i thought.
Where does the time go???

Pan Am Ver. 2 used it briefly after their merger with Carnival.

Oh ok, thanks for confirming that. My cousin flew Pan Am from SJU and I remember picking her up from Terminal 6.

National used it until Pan Am took them over.

TWA used it for domestic ops until 1999/2000. Int'l ops were in Terminal 5.

The two were connected rather poorly with a covered walkway. Don't know when that came down . . . but it's been gone ever since TWA pulled out.

For a while after the pullout of T6, TWA kept one gate for Tampa flights only. It was quite bizarre, but I'm sure it had to do with TWA fulfilling a lease obligation to the PA.

After the TWA pullout, UAL used gates 1-3 for LAX and SFO flights.

Pan Am used the south rotunda. HP, ATA, Air South, and Carnival used the middle gates. The terminal was very underused.

jetBlue initially used the south rotunda and gradually expanded north. Pan Am, Carnival, ATA, and Air South were long gone. Eventually, B6 pushed HP to T7.

UAL left after 9/11 and their significant pulldown in JFK ops.

It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, the new terminal 5 was going to be built by United and have TWA as a major tenant.

TWA is long gone and UAL is down to a handful of flights to LAX, SFO, and IAD.

How times change.

BTW, did anyone catch the documentary on Gallery HD 2 or 3 nights ago about a (failed) exhibition in terminal 5 (ex TWA)? The exhibition was shut down after the opening night, October 1st 2004. Anyway, I've never been in terminal 5 but it looked stunning, especially in HD.

Nice pics. Thanks for posting them! It's nice to see that the terminal is coming along very quickly. I like the huge glass windows.

Will the departure boards be used for jetBlue departures???

Please tell me yes! That would be so awesome!

I know the original terminal will act as a sort of gateway to the new one.

Man, do I miss those tubes. Everyone remember the red carpet???

That terminal was simply amazing. Even in the end, when TWA was shell of its former self . . . it was just amazing.

Wasn't Pan Am in T4?

Pan Am was in T3.

But Pan Am II, back in the 1990s, was in T6.

When is the Terminal set to open now. I know it originally was planned for Spring of 2008 but I heard on here by some B6 crewmember that is was ahead fo schedule and underbudget but if it is ahead and it looks it, when is it now scheduled to open.

I was thinking that the new terminal was going to open Early 2009, but I hope sooner. It looks like this project is moving as fast as possible, because jetBlue needs the upgraded and expanded facilities as soon as possible. I guess weather and material avalability are going to play a big role.

Also, I wonder what is going to happen to Terminal 6?

Before they moved to Terminal 6, Pan Am II was located in Terminal 4, the old IAB, in one of those little things I called "storefronts". They were co-located with Icelandair and ALIA Royal Jordanian. I think Icelandair actually provided ticketing/check-in agents but I could be wrong on that.

I recently took a walking tour of the T5 construction site. They said that we are ahead of schedule, and under budget! Always great news.

I have to say, seeing it from the AirTran and from the T6 grounds, you don't realize how humungous T5 is going to be!

They said that T6 is part of "Phase II" of the project and that a final decision has not been made as to its future. He did confirm that T5 will not have FIS, but that T6 could potentially be used for that.

Good things to come!!

If anyone wants to see what the configuration of T-6 was when it first opened in 1970 (and what T-5 looked like at the same time) look at the book " The Airport" by Edward G. Blankenship (Praeger Publishers, 1974). It also shows other terminals at the airport (and other airports as well) and I highly suggest it to anyone who is interested in airport history.

Also Vanguard Airlines operated from T6 to PIT with 737s for a short time.
