US Airways Express To Begin CLT-HPN, End PIT-HPN

Tue Sep 19, 2006 12:54 am

US Airways Express will be starting 3x daily CLT-HPN service with the slots freed up from ending PIT-HPN service.

Like most routes, US served CLT-HPN with mainline back in the day.

Christmas Comes Early This Year - US Airways Announces New Service Between Its Hub in Charlotte, N.C. and White Plains, N.Y.

TEMPE, Ariz., Sept 18, 2006 -- Effective December 3, US Airways (NYSE: LCC) will begin service three times per day between its hub in Charlotte, N.C. and White Plains, N.Y. This new service complements five daily round trips already established between Philadelphia and White Plains, N.Y. as well as three daily round trips from both Washington, D.C. and Boston. Passengers will be able to fly the route every day, creating a perfect schedule for a business trip or vacation getaway.

That still leaves onew open slot. There a currently four dailys to HPN from PIT. Three Dash 8s and AWAC CRJ. Wonder if PIT will keep one daily Dash to HPN for or if the slot will go in the closet for later use?

Isn't there a way to straddle slots in HPN such that you end up taking up two slots with one turn?

I hope it does. Perhaps another regional carrier for USX will have some interest in bringing back lost regional service. Of course, it's up to the airport authority to have the competence to make the right moves here... With the new Republic station taking shape there, I hope the airport authority can do something to woo them to expand...

If memory serves, HPN's "slots" are actually capacity allocations instead of actual departure/arrival slots. The terminal is limited as to how many passengers may use it in a certain time period. If this is the case, four 37-seat Dash-8's would be nearly identical in capacity to three 50-seat CRJ's.

Maybe PIT-HPN will return, maybe it won't. Don't be too surprised to see other small/medium-sized markets getting the boot from US soon. PIT still has over 200+ flights a day, not bad for a large station.

Its a shame that that terminal is held down the way it is if it were unconstrained it could easily be in the neghborhood of 6-7 million pax today. It could be the SNA of the east.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Westchester County does not want an SNA east

I did a lot of flight instructing into and out of HPN. In my opinion, which is probably worthless  Smile, HPN matched FRG and LGA for the most congested airports in the NY State.

They really don't need to make HPN into a major commercial airport.

Stewart Airport is the only airport in the area capable of being a 4th major airport.

I'm sure the folks in Westchester County and the adjacent Connecticut county (can't remember the name of county) would never let that happen anyway. IIRC, they hate the airport as it is!!

What a mess.....It would make sense to keep at least two flights from PIT-HPN for people connecting to the west (HPN-PIT-LAX). Who wants to go to PHL or CLT? Does anyone know if the PIT-HPN loads were bad?

Yeah... I WISH that there were 200+ flights daily out of PIT on US... 129 express flights, very lame. 41 mainline flights... ULTRA LAME... I don't care what anyone says; I still think and hope that PIT could one day have at least one more airline set up a focus city there... kinda like BOS...

That's a seasonal reduction. September-November is the lowest-yielding time of the year.

Also TTN, it's closer than SWF to Manhattan (although not by much) it's located right off I-95 exactly halfway between NYC and Philly in affluent densly populated Central Jersey, and it's a mile or two from Bucks and Montgomery Counties PA which are two of PA's most affluent counties. It's also surrounded by large corporate campuses and headquarters of companies like Bristol Myers Squib, Johnson and Johnson, Dow Jones, Merril Lynch.

The Port Authority is studying ABE, SWF and TTN as a possible fourth airport to invest in, IMO TTN is prefereable because it's better situated, closer to Manhattan and there's an existing rail line running right through the Airport that already has SEPTA service to Center City Philadelphia and eventually NJ Transit service to Newark, Hoboken, NY Penn.

Better connection options in CLT, as you pointed out yourself. Nothing concrete but anecdotal evidence from some FAs I know said loads were usually pretty light.

That would be Fairfield County, CT. They may not like the airport being in their backyards, yet they all probably fly out of there. Of course there's a lot of cars with NY plates in the garage. But there's nearly as many cars with CT plates that have graced the garage as well - including mine.

NO, you are wrong, I have been following the daily flights for over a year now, the highest has never been over 180. The reduction is not huge. The only routes losing frequencies are the following:

PIT-SAN (1 to 0)
PIT-SEA (1 to 0)
PIT-MIA (1 to 0)
PIT-CUN (1 weekly to 0)
PIT-SJU (1 weekly to 0)

The total number of daily departures at PIT has been between 164 and 178 for about one year. I am not going off of the US fact sheets, I actually go through the flights once a week!

It would be nice to see this number go to 175-190... but it probably won't. I am optimistic anyway about some of the flights anyway! Here's to our optimism man!!  champagne

I am ready to welcome any increase, big or small! US is shaping Pittsburgh to be profitable for them. I sure hope US doesn't just cut routes claiming they are unprofitable.

Ok, I am by no means doubting the fact that PIT-HPN may not have good loads/is unprofitable, but I just hope other routes aren't pulled for no reason. Just when I think the cuts are over for PIT, US cuts another route!

Not likely. The E190s will be used between PHL and Providence, Hartford, Houston and Dallas/FW. Maybe the 2nd batch of 190s will see some PIT service late next year, but 25/day - I doubt it. Your reference may have said, or meant to say 25 flights a day out of PHL (starting around December 2006).

I had little faith in that particular source, but I wanted to say something positive about PIT for once. Some will fly through there, there's no doubt about that. The only questions are how many and where are they going? Just because they will be based in PHL doesn't mean they will be limited to operating directly to and from there.
