Good Ideas For A 12 Hour Layover At Klax?

Tue Sep 19, 2006 1:09 pm

Hello everyone!
As said in the topic, I´ll be spending this next Saturday 23SEP, some good 12 hours at KLAX, arriving (I hope so...as a standby you never know) from EZE-x/IAD-LAX and continuing to GUA...all on UA. If everything goes as planned, I´ll be from 11.10 or so till 23.20 in LAX...the golden question is: What would you guys recommend me to do (apart from the couple of hours I already reserved to spotting!!)????

Is there any lounge where I can get a descent shower?? Any CHEAP motel or so to sleep for a couple of hours??...well, any ideas are more than welcome!

My best regards to all of you!!

first, don't call it klax or us locals will beat you up. LAX works just fine.

Second, do a search for LAX in the title, and there's lots of people asking this same question...

Well, for your couple of hours spotting I would reccomend the famous (among ourselves...) 'In-n-Out' burger, which is only about a 15 minute walk from most terminals. The photograph opportunities there are great.

If you want to leave the airport, try having a walk around somewhere that is not too far from LAX, such as Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

On the other hand, UK_Dispatcher, The "In-n´-Out" idea sounds great! I will try to get there if the day helps! THANKS A LOT

The Admirals Club in Terminal 4 has showers, but a day pass is $50. You might do better by trying to get a day room at one of the nearby hotels/motels. The hotel vans circle the arrivals level continually, and Saturday, being the weekend, will mean plenty of open rooms. Traveler's Aid may even have some suggestions, or you could try a low-ball Priceline bid, or an airline employee's rate.

If you won't have a car, I'd head up Lincoln Blvd. on the Santa Monica bus to the 3rd St. Promenade and a walk along the beach and down to the Santa Monica Pier.

What do you enjoy?
Are you a museum buff? Many answers then from the Getty, but you would have to rent a car or take an expensive taxi ride.
Many inexpensive hotels on the west side. Look at comfortinn.com or bestwestern.com
The beach towns are nice but in that many hours you could go see the wonderful new concert hall and cathedral downtown (possible by the subway but the subway ride from LAX is over an hour and involves over two changes, one in a shaky neighborhood where you sit between two busy freeways waiting for the other train.
Easier to kill a day in LA than many cities.
The airport also has that wonderful central restaurant, where you can have a modertaly expensvie meal but spend time watching planes arrive from around the world, esp in the late afternoon.

Any serious aviation buff goes to the In'n'Out when they visit LAX. There is nothing better than seeing the faces of the passengers as they fly by. I cannot express how pleasant that can be. The theme building restaurant, called 'Encounters' is pretty good (and expensive) and easy to walk to. That is also an experience not to be missed.

Venice Beach

That beach is nice, with excellent shopping. Pizza for only $1!

When I had a 9 hour lay over after arriving on NZ and waiting for the UA flight I went on a nice walk around the terminals, explored some side roads. Based myself on the top floor of a parking building beside terminal 2 and snapped away

Go to In-n-Out burger on Sepulveda Blvd. "The Parking Spot" van which circles the terminals will take you there, you can have a Double-Double animal style with well done fried and a knock-out shake. Sit outside and smell the jet-fuel as Qantas and other heavies land on the runway across the street. I can easily pass a few hours here watching the plans land. Or, if you like, catch a bus to Santa Monica, there's lots to do there.

Something else you can do after you arrive in LAX is take the FlyAway bus to Union Station in downtown. It's only 6 dollars each way, I think. It'll take you right into the train station and across from there is Olvera Street, known for good restaurants and some history of the city. From union station you can also catch the subway (red line) to Hollywood and just take a stroll around the area. It can be done within a couple of hours. Then head back to catch the Flyaway back to LAX, which drops you off right in front of your terminal, and offers great air conditioned bus service. Hope this helps!

The south beach cities (El Segundo, Redondo and Hermosa) are also pretty nice, but I'm not sure how accessible by public transport. Redondo has some excellent cafes and nice beach stretches.

If you're into museums, then a trip to Exhibition Park/USC is pretty nice (not just saying that because I got my PhD from there) - there you'll find a United DC-8 parked in the middle of what looks like a concrete jungle. There is a really cool natural history museum, imax theater and my favourite, african-american art museum. The area isn't too friendly after dark, however.

Of course I think Venice is also a fine option, as is Santa Monica. The only disappointment in the area is Malibu, which is more fancy houses than anything condusive to tourism.

And if you're looking for something really off the wall for your stayover at LAX, visit one of the world's largest sewerage treatment works, just a few miles from the end of the runways at LAX...
