Hapag-Lloyd Background Info

At the risk of sounding like an absolute know-not; is there anyone who could provide me with some information on Hapag-Lloyd? Corporate background, fleet-info, operations,...

To the best of my knowledge, today was the first time I saw one of their B737s (a B734).

Hapag Lloyd is a German charter airline flying to european charter destinations (alround the mediterranean sea...). They have a fleet of B737s and A310s. Hapag Lloyds hub is Hannover, Germany but they operate flights from nearly every big German Airport (Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin...).

I was wondering if they are connected with Lufthansa in one way or another. Are they a subsidiary, or do they sometimes just lease aircraft to LH?
My reason for asking, is there is one photo in the A.N database which indicates a link between the two. Could have been occasional...?
It's a beautiful shot, but unfortunately not very clear on the sticker side of things. The aircraft is obviously carrying the Hapag-Lloyd livery, though.

Also judging by the pics in the database, Hapag-Lloyd has been around for a rather long time. (Amazing I didn't notice them until now. I guess one has to be either in Germany or typical holiday destinations to see them...?)
And they've always been carrying the same livery, apparently. Which is cool, because it looks retro by now. And that's nice for a change, isn't it?

One more question; there are at least four Hapag-Lloyd B727s on A.N, as well. Are they still in the fleet, or have they been phased out? (I wouldn't be surprised at the latter, but you can't blame a guy for asking.)

Their shipping branch is very big, with some Container vessels of 6000TEU capacity. (these are the biggest in the world). (TEU: Twenty feet unit)
They also have a couple of cruise-ships.
By the way, did you know that an airline capt. earns almost double the wage of his seagoing counterpart? New officers, fresh out of college (mine was the Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen) earn in Belgium a mere 28.000 bef. Netto.
No wonder I have changed...

Hapag Lloyd is also flying from Germany to the carribean, f.e. Cuba and the Dominican Republic with their A 310.
They no longer have 727 in the fleet, but I think they are the launch customer of the 737-800!
And right now, they are looking for a replacement for their A310.
They have absolutely nothing to do with LH, and HP is the No. 3 Charter airline in Germany.(I flew them once 8 years ago to Israel, it was not bad, the typical charter airline, not much luxury, but clean and friendly.

It looks like the Hapag-homepage is only available in german, so here are some basic infos: Founded 1972
Fleet: 7 A310,
22 737-800 (some are not delivered yet),
6 737-400.
I`m not sure if they still have 737-500s, I don`t think so. (Although they wrote it in their fleet-infos from 1999).

A little correction: They do not fly to cuba, the only destinations in the carribean are Puerto Plata and Punta Cana.

Some More HF History

HF was founded in the early 1970's to provide a charter arm for the Hapag-Lloyd corporation, whose fleet did not only include merchant, but also cruise ships at that time.
The fleet was made up initially of B727-100's, which actually stayed in the fleet until they got replaced by 735's in 1990/91.
Later on, they also got B727-200(A)'s, B737-200(A)'s and Airbus A300B's, which all were phased out during the great fleet shakeup in the late 80's/ early 90's.
In the 70's, HF also merged with some smaller German charter airlines. I can't remember their names, but I think, one of the was Germanair and another one Panair. Thus, for a brief period of time, they even had some One-Eleven's in their inventory (which actually got repainted into HF livery).
Talking about livery, it has remained basically unchanged since the airline's startup. The only difference is that the aircraft's belly is now painted white instead of grey/ bare-metal.
HF is not affiliated with LH, quite contrarily it belongs to the "red" IT tour group (which also includes the tour operator TUI and LTU, among others), while LH owns the "yellow" group (Condor and some tour operators).
That's all I can remember right now.

Okay, here is some more info on them.

The Hapag-Lloyd group is currently 100%-owned by german industrial group Preussag. Hapag-Lloyd includes the sections shipping (mainly container shipping, BTW, the 6.000 TEU vessels Hapag-Lloyd has ordered are not the world biggest ones, Maersk operates several 6.600 TEU units and P&O Nedlloyd has ordered 7.200 TEU vessels), flying (Hapag-Lloyd Flug) plus several other activities connected to logistics. In addition they have serveral travel companies, the biggest of them being Germany´s number 1, TUI. Only some months ago they were in the media ´cause they bought Thompson Travel, UK´s #1.

As previously mentioned they were founded in 1972 with an inital batch of Bac 1-11 which were later replaced by B727-100 and A300B4. The 737-400 and -500 joined the fleet as well as the A310-200 and -300 and the A300 and B727 left the fleet. Hapag-Lloyd is the launch customer for the Boeing B737-800 (with an original order for 16), now they are close to have 25 738s. The Boeing B737-500 has been phased out, two of them are leased for several years to georgian airline Azena. Currently they evaulate the replacement for the A312/313. They are considered to be a potential launch customer for the A330-100 as well as for some A330-200 but the B763/4 are said to be still considered.

They mainly fly to the holiday destinations in the mediterranean area with Spain being the most popular part. Long-haul services are only flown to the Carribean.

in addition to the above info, before,the owner of HapagLloyd, Preussag, bid for Thomson and its airline Britannia, (the worlds largest charter operation). It owned 51% of the Thomas Cook Group wich operated jmcAir (formerly Caledonian and Flying Colours) which it has since had to put on the market in order for the take over to go ahead according to EEC regulations.

Intersetingly enough it is still funding the purchase of 2 new 757-300's for jmc Air to be delivered in Spring 2001.

Hapag-Lloyd and jmc had already begun to integrate purchasing power for aircraft and landing costs, fuel costs etc and the bid for Thomsons was a real blow, leaving the prospect of jmc up in the air, but I believe that Carlson Leisure Group, a huge American conglomerate is to up its stake from 22% to 100% in the near future.

Hapag-Lloyd was supposed to be looking at the A330 to replace all of its A310 aircraft and also to up its additions of the 737-800's in the near future, to achieve fleet commonality with Britannia.

Preussag's main aim is to be the number one tour operator and charter airline within Europe in the next 12 months, and they have a huge purse with which to do it!!!!!!

What Do Passengers Want On Long Haul?

I work long haul as the Senior on board, and it would interest me greatly to find out exactly what customers REALLY want in both economy and business, FIRST CLASS IS OF NO IMPORTANCE AT THE MOMENT.

I'm used to the "extra legroom" in economy, but I'm looking for suggestions that airline executives will actually implement or at least take the suggestion seriously. for example a recent questionnaire (yes we still do them) came back with:

23. What can we do to make your flight more enjoyable?

The answer was: "Make the flight attendants work topless and get rid of the queers"

Not exactly politically correct!!!In my experience gay stewards and stewardesses often provide an excellent service, even to those red necks who insist on bringing their wives on board, especially when they find out there is a special fare for passengers under 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Realistic suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

just some exra info:

Hapag will be the first to incorporate BBJ style
winglets on its 738's starting this winter.
Sure they will look nice  

Also they are mainly filling their planes with clients
of one of the biggest tour operators in Europe TUI
which of course is owned by Preussag

Hapag-Lloyd... They Ain't Just Planes

HAPAG-Lloyd has been moving people around for a LOOOONNG time. The name reflects this, as it was formed with the merger of the two great German transatlantic shipping lines Hamburg-Amerika and Norddeutscher Lloyd in the 1930's. The two parent companies date back to the mid-1800's.

They are still in the shipping business in a big way with a large container fleet and several cruise ships including the COLUMBUS, which is based on the Great Lakes in the summer, and the EUROPA.

They are not the only steamship line which tried to make the jump from planes to ships... England's Cunard Line marketed jet flights accross the Atlantic in the 60's too, but BOAC eventually bought that operation... if anyone has seen pictures of BOAC Cunard jets I'd love to see them. Also Taiwan's Evergreen cargo company also operates container ships, and is considering a foray into the cruise business (possibly under the name of Lloyd Triestino, another old transatlantic line which they own).

Happy Lloyd And Bavaria...

My uncle was maintenance engineer at Hapag-Lloyd's Hannover base in the late 1970's.... I guess it was from the frequent visits as a child to the HF maintenance hangar that I got my addiction to aviation - which now ended in an aviaton job for me  

I remember that they had a problem with the hangar door height when they got their first A300 B4's.... the hangar as such was high enough to take up the plane, but the doors weren't, so they had to lift the nose gear until the tail fitted under the hangar door, then pulled the aircraft inside and let the nose gear down....

As far as I know the A300's came from Bavaria Germanair, a charter airline which had been formed by the two formerly independent charter airlines Germanair (with A300) and Bavaria (with BAC 1-11).

The era of the 727-100's (AHLQ and AHLS I think...) lasted until the early 1990's, when the whole narrowbody fleet was switched to 737-400 and -500.

I never flew HF myself, but from what I heard from my family members who fly HF frequently, the service on board is very nice.
