Lately, on Boeing's newest large widebodies (the 777-200LR, 777-300ER, and 747-8), Boeing has been giving GE
exclusive deals. The 747-400 was the first Boeing aircraft to be offered with three engine choices, followed by the 777-200(ER). The 767-300ER was originally offered with two engine choices (GE and Pratt), but an option for RR
engines was added later in its life. Some, however, say that the three engine options for the 777-200(ER) was a mistake, and say this is the reason why the 787 is being offered with only two engine options (GE and RR
). Boeing actually considered offering the 787 with only one engine option (most likely GE
), but opposition from airlines urged Boeing to offer two engine options. Many say, though, that on the lower end (the 737 market segment), that Y1 could be able to support three engine options. For Y1's engines, while CFM is currently studiying a CFM56 successor, Pratt and RR
are working on separate designs, which could split IAE. What about Y3? Y3 may not be able to support three engine options, while airlines may say that one engine option is not enough. What are your thoughts on the engine choices for Y3?
