FI: NW Poised For Big E175 Order.

Wed Sep 20, 2006 9:13 am

Northwest Airlines is to order Embraer 175 twinjets for its planned feeder unit Compass Airlines, according to a source close to the deal.

The US major in March revealed it was in talks with Bombardier and Embraer for a fleet of 36 aircraft, with both a 76-seat two-class CRJ900 or 75-seat two-class E-175 under consideration.

Well the uncomforting thing here is, the fact that there's no mention of the E-190/195 for the mainline fleet. I'm not sure if , or how much the pilots restructured contract puts a cap on the Compass fleet.

Jetjack...that is a little uncomforting. Could it be that Compass can have a little more latitude than the mainline at this point? Isn't Compass treated as a separate entity compared to NW mainline? Different certificate...etc.

It currently seems that NW will replace the DC9s with A320s, A319s and something smaller (E-190/195 or CRJ-900). There were rumors way back that NW was going to order the C-series (E-190 size) from Bombardier as a replacement for some of the DC-9s and for use on thinner mainline routes but since that plane was shelved, maybe NW has to think a little harder and longer on what to get as well as talk a little more with pilots. No matter what NW will need a replacement for the DC9s that will keep the fleet simpler and keep operations at a minimum. To me that points to E-190/195.

Anyway...I hope I will get a chance to fly on these E-jets. But I doubt they will serve CWA.

(PS. the previous statements were all opinon and not founded in details but basic observation...I am not a pro.)
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Yes, they're were using the DH operating certificate. I think there is a cap on how much fliying the Compass can have, but I don't know what that is. I only know that anything between 51 and 76 seats can be operated by Compass. 77 seats or more goes to the main line. It's only 36 at this point, but the fact that the order only refers to the 175 is what makes me uneasy.
