AS 738 To Wear 75th Anniversary Retro Livery

Wed Sep 20, 2006 4:46 pm

To celebrate their 75th Anniversary, Alaska Airlines employees are being asked to choose one of four retro liveries that will adorn a brand new B-737-800 to be rolled out this Spring:

Personally, I like the second one the best - followed by number four, the "Golden Nugget Jet" livery.

Come to think of it, it's too bad we can't have all four liveries flying around next year!

I personally voted for the "red tail" (number three) livery. I thought it had a little "more" to it, and also was the more modern option as far as trying to blend certain brand aspects of yesteryear and present day (specifically the tail logo which can be found on any piece of Alaska uniform gear!). Just thought the shift away from the navy would be a nice touch, as well!

While I like the Golden Nugget Jet, I think the idea and background behind the "Golden Nugget Jet" might be a little lost, and the second one, while nice, was a bit too old and too closely resembled the nametags and logo belts from the uniforms!

In the end, I'll be happy with any livery--all will be terrific I am sure!

GOLDEN NUGGET JET livery is my favorite - that's my vote . . . who do I pay??  wink

Personally, I like them all, and I'd like to see one of each . . . that'd be awesome.

Why would they just keep this livery for 1 year? AS should keep the retro paint job permanent, just like Salmon-thirty-Salmon.

I really love both of those first two...they have such a "golden age" aviation feel to them. The red tail is pretty snappy too. I could go without the nuggets. None of them look bad though. I think this is fantastic idea...I love AS's special liveries, and this one will probably become my favorite. As beautiful as some modern ones are, a lot feel too "Web 2.0" for me. I like stately and classic designs. AS, CO, AA...the new US is OK too.

To me, the first one looks like a military BBJ and the second one looks like the Delta of old.

My vote would be for the body of the fourth with the tail of the third.

I'm very partial to the first two, and I like the second the best, although perhaps without the word "Fly." I'm assuming the text is interchangeable, as there is different text on each of the four options. I'd take the text from #1, slap it on #2, and be done with it. If it were up to me, of course.

checkmark  ...and since the retro livery is in commemoration of Alaska Airlines' 75th Anniversary, "older is better" IMHO and the bare metal livery best depicts what the Alaska fleet looked like "in the beginning." The livery is also associated with Alaska's DC-3 fleet, a type that is rightly considered by most historians to be the first airliner to make it possible for airlines to earn profits by carrying passengers in regularly scheduled service.

I like the first one. It has a clean, classsic look to it. However I can see problems as it looks a little to much like an AA jet.

The second one is BEAUTIFUL.... I wish they'd swap their entire fleet to that scheme!
The third one is my second choice.

Unfortunately, I work for a different aviation company up here in Anchor Town, so I guess I don't get to vote...  Sad

If I had to pick one, it would be the Golden Nugget Jet #4, since that was what was flying the first time I saw an Alaska jet.

Wandering a bit off-topic... interesting you should mention the likeness of Eastern's Golden Falcon tail logo and the bird adorning the tails of Alaska retro liveries 2 and 3 above. To this day, Alaska flight crew uniforms have a depiction of the same bird seen on the tails of Alaska's 1950s-early '60s livery. When I see Alaska pilots in uniform in an airport terminal, my first impressions have sometimes been: a former Eastern pilot is making a statement by wearing their uniform from their days with Eastern or I am having a very vivid flashback to the days when Eastern was still in business.

Really wish they'd do all four, but if I had to pick one (and since I don't work for AS, I don't get to), I'd go with the DC-3 era silver/gray in a close call with the the Golden Nugget. Maybe everyone at AS could conspire to make sure the voting ends in a four way tie!!

I'd vote for the one with the red tail. That one is just beautiful!  trophy

The best Alaska livery is that of the 70s shown on the 727 pics in reply 24. Those colors still look rather contemporary and very sharp.

As far as the other retro options, number one looks like a military aircraft. Number 2.. well there's too many dark blue tails already although with that cheatline it looks very sharp. Number 3 is nice but the tail is too plain.

This topic got me thinking...When the sourdough, onion dome, totem, and Eskimo (Chester?) themes were used, were they equally spilt among the fleet or were there just a couple of each and then mostly Chester? The reason I'm asking is because I flew AS a lot in the 70s (as a child), but I always ended up on a plane with the Eskimo - even though the other one's were definitely flying around.

BTW...I think one reason those classic 727 designs wouldn't work is because they wouldn't be on 727's anymore. The horizontal stab would cut off the cheat lines as they swooped up the rudder, and there is no #2 inlet to paint the big ALASKA on, which is a nice part of the effect. They're neat, but I think they'd lose their zing on a 737NG.

I'm surprised how everyone likes the first scheme. That's just ugly, and the tail looks somehow similar to the 75 DL scheme. Maybe if it's bare metal all over then it might look decent.

I'd say the "Golden Nugget" fuselage pattern is my favorite, but the tail is too plain. That might have looked good on a 727, which also had metallic areas, but in an all-white 737 it's gonna be rather boring.

It would work, and nicely. Like in the 707s that had the same scheme with the "Alaska" right over the vertical tail stripes. But I would instead put (big 727 sized) Alaska titles diagonally like in the classic Avianca tail. Then instead of fuselage titles, depending how it looks these could be moved to the engines.

Then the black nose of course, which looks lovely and gives it character. One in the green, red, and purple hockey stick. Now, those would be some truly elegant Alaska 737s.

#3 is my 1st choice, followed by #1, #4, and #2 in that order.

As someone mentioned having the next several AS 737NGs coming off the Boeing assembly line in retro colours, would be a cool thing. It would be quite cool to see all of the old AS liveries brought back.
