BA New Config On Shorthaul Fleets Coming

Wed Sep 20, 2006 8:09 pm

A321 - 1 Extra row of converter seats will be added to expand the available Club Cabin by 5 to 54 if needed.

A319/A320 - existing Y seats removed and "space saver" seats (as seen on A321) added. Also some converter seats will be removed and this will reduce the available club cabin by a few in favour of Y seats- this allows for 1 extra row on each a/c so now A319 will have 22 rows and A320 26 rows at a pitch of 30 Inch.

757 - Cloth seats removed from rear cabin (AT LAST!) and replaced with "space saver seats" allowing for 35 rows instead of 34.

Starts this week with the first A319. All mentioned above completed by end of first quarter of 2007.

Cheers

Are the "space saver" seats on the A321 the Recaro ones? They look so amazing on the manufacturer's website...

30 inch pitch in Y... I can't wait to read the complaints from our USA-based a.netters who are "unbelievably cramped" when sitting in seats spaced at 31-32 inch pitch.  Wink Might BA lose a few pax because of this?

I really think this is stupid. I think BA are tying to compete with the lccs which isn't possible due to their higher operating costs. Willie Walsh is taking BA the same way as EI and it just won't work. They need to concentrate on the business and higher quality, not fall into the lcc category

It is very much possible and it's working successfully. BA's shorthaul operation is now profitable for the first time in years, despite the fact the fares are lower than ever. Huge savings have been made at LGW with product and crew complement changes. Further changes are being trialled at LHR and will be introduced in the coming months.

I doubt it will feel like that much difference between 30 and 31 inch pitch with the new space saver seats. Good move by BA, only issue is that this puts them with one of the lowest pitches of a full service carrier in Europe. If you want the 31, you'll just have to get on a 737 Wink

Perhaps it is, but in BA's eyes, it's extra seats, and extra profit, the noticeable difference between 30 and 31in isn't that much, they aren't changing the product and most travelers won't even know, or notice the difference, so it's not a huge deal for BA.
It's based on profit, and I doubt Willie Walsh really cares if you lose 1in of leg room if he can earn an few extra hundred pounds.

But the point is, EI are still around, he knows BA is different to EI, but he's doing what he knows best.

But high quality costs money, and you make that from selling seats, it's only 1in, they aren't changing the product itself.

It'll earn a lot more than that!

Whoever said they weren't going to have club? Also BA have never had F on shorthaul,

I have flown First class in a Trident from Stockholm to LHR in 1973. But it was BEA. Did First Class survive into BA times?

He's balancing he costs and service issue. The fact is that pax are now very cost-conscious in the majority. However, an increasing majority still want some backup in customer services etc. Personally I did a NCL-BGY last week in the a.m and p.m LIN-LHR with BA. The seat pitch was noticably better on BA.

Frankly I'm amazed what passes for business class in Europe on the 2 - 4 hour sectors. Economy class seats with the middle seat blocked off? This was tried in SA when South African introduced the 737-800's but was vehemently opposed by the paying public. I had a recent flight on Air France in business from CDG to TUN and CMN to CDG. Both sectors were extremely uncomfortable especially being over 6ft tall. Thank goodness the food was good though! The tickets were expensiveand the business class cabin was full, why not then supply a decent business environment?

As A340600 said, BA aren't removing club, far from it, they're just adding seats, BA main line at LHR will still have club for a while yet.

I think it did for a while, but was replaced, probably 1980's time.

I know I know  Wink, I was talking on the cost per seat.

The 30" pitch has still got to be good for those short European flights. I never understood why the pitch for European flights in Economy was 31" and yet that was also the pitch for longhaul flying in Economy.

When you look at the vast distances that you travel longhaul with BA and yet the difference in fares is big why do they offer the same space?

A 30" pitch in Economy for Europe is adequate but 31" for longhaul is appalling. BA needs to move with the times in this cabin.

Remember that the 30" pitch economy seats are thinner than the 31" pitch long haul seat and the knee room is the same.
