UFO L1011 At SEA, What Airline?

Several times in the past few months, including today, there has been an L1011 at the south satellite that has a plain white fuselage and a dark blue tail. There are no markings that I can see from my vantage point about 1/4 mile away. I thought maybe it was ATA, but I looked through the photo database here for ATA L1011 shots in the past year and saw nothing that matched. There were a couple shots of ones with a plain blue tail, but the fueslage had the ATA titles prominently displayed. Anyone know what airline this bird belongs too? Today's flight departed approx 11:30 AM if that helps. Any help is appreciated.

It was ATA #7462 to IND.

This is the US Military pacific rotator flight, which goes to Japan and elsewhere from SEA. ATA has it on an L1011-500 at least through the end of September. After that, the new fiscal year begins for the Air Mobility Command, and the fixed buy portion is now classified for security reasons, so I don't even know if the flights will continue on the same schedule as this year. However, if they do, there's no guarantee that they will be on an ATA L1011.

N162AT and N163AT got the same paint scheme when they were D-checked between last October and February. They may get billboard titles in the future. Sorry it was so hard for you to find this:

N164AT will be entering D check the middle of October and is getting the same paint scheme as 162 and 163. Shortly, all 3 will then receive 4 X 6 foot ATA logo decals on the fwd fuselage above the window line so they don't go around incognito any longer. The AMC prefers to have the company logo displayed prominently on their contractor's aircraft and this is a cheaper alternative to the full new scheme.

For security reasons on a public forum, I'd rather not say where heavy maintenance is performed.

Yes, all four -500s left (161, 162, 163, 164) have had the rear spar mods. Only 160 did not receive it and was grounded right before the mandated date. There is now another rear spar mod required by August 2010 for the outer wing (mandated by FAA AD2005-15-01)

Over the last year and a half, the L-1011 fleet has had dispatch reliability in the 94-98% range.

How many L1011s does ATA have flying and parked? There seem to be lots of parked L1011s. Is a particular model or engine type preferable when choosing to operate such a plane?

All the 100's have been parked with 194 the last to go,it's still sitting in miami as a parts machine for a damaged L-1011 down there.I believe one of the reasons was that there was no more support for the engines that were on it.I'm sure somebody could give you more in depth info.

Back at my former company we always preferred the 100's on the reliability side vs the 500's when they first came online.Nothing like downloading a 500 at midnight and waiting for a recovery flight from DTW or IND at 0300.The only drawback on the 100's was sometimes they would have to stop for fuel on the way back to us.All in all good times,glad to see the dispatch reliability has come up.

4 -500s left flying (N161-164AT). 1 -100 sold in May (N194AT) and 8 parked in ROW (N160, 186, 188, 189, 191, 195, 197, 198AT) which have been sold for scrap.

One issue is that it's virtually impossible to overhaul a -22B engine these days (at least in compliance with US requirements), so you want a -524 engine on your L1011 if you want to do more than park it and stare at it.

Your are correct and it can probably be figured out, but as an ATA employee I am just not comfortable confirming and advertising it any longer.

I am not the engine expert, but I do know that we have several major AD issues on the -524 right now as well as chronic vibration issues so even this engine is becoming increasingly difficult to operate.

Now the L-1011 does have its share of aging aircraft issues which make it harder to operate, but its ashame that it seems to be dying off a little earlier due to the engines and their related problems more so than the airframe itself. There is no longer a large stable of airworthy aircraft or reputable operators so a firm business case for a re-engining program is simply not possible.

Sorry man. Sad I tried, but this is the best we can do. wink  If it was any bigger, it would stretch over the window line and then we might as well put the full size on which would need to be painted. I don't think it will look half bad. At least it will have some form of corporate identity.
