CO MSY-LAX Nonstop..for Three Days!?

Fri Sep 22, 2006 2:37 pm

I see in the schedules that CO will be running MSY-LAX nonstop for three, yes three, days: November 25th - 27th. Boeing 737-800 service.

Does anyone know if this is a special deal for Thanksgiving travel, or is CO "testing the waters" in the market?

I think that there is room for an additional nonstop, and with CO's large following down here, they'd probably do very well.

Sounds like a special deal to me. Regular non hub flying doesn't really appeal to CO.

I speculate that it is just moving a/c around during a holiday schedule as there are no nonstops in the other direction. IMO

I've seen CO do this before. Last year they ran a few CLE-SAN-CLE nonstops around Thanksgiving.

And CO is again this year.

However MSY-LAX is a non hub to non hub where CLE is a hub. CO generally doesn't fly non hub flights with few exceptions... SEA-ANC comes to mind.

Around 1995 I flew from MDW to LAX via MSY on CO Lite. The MSY-LAX leg was a kind of reverse redeye. We departed MSY around 10 PM and arrived LAX just before midnight local time. The plane was a 735 and EVERY seat was taken!

Actually MSY-LAX used to be a regular run flown out of the Houston crew base in the late 80's on the 727-200.

It was a redeye in both direcctions and I remember it because I was the Second Officer on several trips!

Hey Matt, SEA-ANC is a continuation of another flight. It is CO667 from IAH to ANC so this flight is actually a hub flight with a stop over in Seattle. But, you are right in that CO doesn't fly many non hub flights. The CO flights from LAX to Mexico (are they still operating those flights?) would be an example.

Thanks, and if I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.

The flight stops in Seattle to tap into the very large SEA-Alaska market.

The CO Express flights from LAX to Mexico are only seasonal. They're done after the summer travel season, and I think they restart for the winter. LAX-HNL is another non-hub route for CO.

It's interesting that most of the non-hub flying seems to involve LAX. And if you think about it, LAX is the closest thing to a focus city that CO has. Looking it at that way, LAX-MSY might not be that farfetched.

Are there any football games over Thanksgiving weekend? It wouldn't be NFL because LA doesn't have a team, but college? The fact that there are no return flights probably negates this possibility.

CO is doing several non-hub routes out of MSY for the break, capitalizing on the student market.

Don't forget about all the non-hub flying out of Florida cities on CO (albeit CO Connection).

I remember when CO used to fly MSY to SFO nonstop with MD-80s back in like 87 or 88? That was random and interesting.

LGA-AUA(or SXM) also comes to mind, as did the old SAT-MEX service.

They also may be flying them for holiday reunion flights for the passengers who were relocated outside of the MSY area. Since alot of the original population has been relocated all over, LA is prob a large relocation spot.
