IB A340-300: Where To?

Fri Sep 22, 2006 4:15 pm

It seems as though many long haul routes from MAD to Latin ameica have been swtched from A340-300 to A340-600. for example, all routes goin to Central america (MAD-GUA-SJO-MAD, MAD-SJO-PTY-MAD, MAD-SJO-MAD)
, MAD-UIO-GYE-MAD, MAD-LIM, MAD-BOG, MAD-CCS.
These were traditionally served by A340-300 but with the coming of the -600 they have been replaced though I still believe some -300s still go to UIO-GYE.

I would like to know what are the routes that are served by the A340-300. It seems to me like there aren't enough routes in IB's network where these replaced A340-300 could be sent to . I can only think of GRU, JNB to name 2 examples.

thanks in advance

JFK, MIA, ORD, and MEX do often see the A340-600 along with the A340-300.

Iberia flies this aircraft sometimes when 346's are in check. See, as example on September 19 or on October 12. No as regular but EZE gets sometimes 343's.

That depends on the season and on the loads...

CCS is served by both. Right now, IB is sending their A343, but about a month ago they sent the A346, obviously for High-season.

MIA is the same. A month ago I saw the A346 parked at one of the gates. Last week, there was an A343.

What I can say is that their A343s Suck! especially the ones they send to South & Central America.

Cheers

Talk about a downgrade! miss the glory days of IB sending the Classic 742 and even the 743 into Miami!

It would be nice if they sent the 346 daily instead of sporatically

Of all the IB A343s only EC-IIH and EC-IDF never go to Central or South America. They fly only to HAV and TFN.

So which are those "special" ones? and what makes them "special"?

I know IB exclusively sends A346s down to SJO, but a few weeks back, I saw an A343 taking off from SJO. I could recognise it just by listening to the engines, which made me wonder why on that day the usual A346 was subbed with an A343.

Maybe the load for that flight didn't warrant the use of larger aircraft, or they needed the extra A346 somewhere else?

I don't know, maybe because those A343s are all a bunch of flying machines without any pleasurable goals pax-wise...

Special is not the right word; I'd say UNspecial. Those are perhaps the worst aircraft I've flown. DC-9s here in Venezuela are more comfy and better looking than those ugly, dirty and uncomfy A343s...

I might have used wrong words, I said they send those to Central and South America because my best friend has flown several times to the States and they look different.

I really don't want to start a fight about IB...But do you think they have a special type of A340-300 with all kind of luxury things used for the US route? Of course not: obviously IB planes are not by any means wonderful but saying they send bad ones to Central America and South America doesn't seem very reasonable, knowing that these routes are the base of their long-haul program.

During most of the summer it is. Towards the end of the summer and beginning of fall you see the double A340-600 on the weekends. Come winter both flights will be A340-300's for the most part until Spring.

Yea, but it was a treat for me. The first A340 landing I've ever seen was a visual by an A343, EC-HGU to be precise, on SJO's Runway 25, so seeing an A343 after such a long time was truely something neat.

Now I want to see in person an A346 land on 25. Big grin

I can ONLY assume your are referring specifically to IB's A343s right? because AF's A343s for example are great... excellent AVOD IFE (even in Y class), great food, good service, super silent (I could actually sleep unlike flying on a 777).... so in reality, it comes down to what the airline puts in its planes... I do agree, IB pax service is behind the competition... so I'm sure you didn't try to generalize an aircraft because one airline has poor service...

Really? I've only flown 343s (several time) and although I'm not Airbus fana t all, I think it's nice. Why would I expect so much difference with the 346?

BTW, Santiago SCL widely served with 343s to MAD (Lan Chile, Iberia and Air Madrid), although we've been visited sometimes by 346s.

Actually, as usual, 95% of the people on board won't even know the difference - or they'll know, and simply not care (I'd be in that group).

From a passenger's perspective, there's no real difference between the two - unless, of course, an airline already has more modern seats on the -600. Other than that, there's really no difference of any relevance... or at least none that I've ever noticed (and that's after several -300 and several -600 flights).

With Iberia the differences are the seats and LCD monitors. The A340-600 cabin feels newer as well and you can't forget the awesome tail view camrea!

I booked a flight MEX-MAD-MEX and I'm getting an A343 in both segments. The flight will be at the end of December and coming back in January.

MEX has two daily flights from IB and it seems that they use both kind of aircrafts.

No, Iberia doesn't have PTV's back in economy on their A340 fleet. If your flying on the A340-600 there will be large LCD screens located above the middle aisle which are not very difficult to view from the other aisles. If your flying on the A340-300 there will be tv monitors I believe in the middle aisle as well that are slightly more hard to view but still not difficult.

If your flying on the A340-600 then the seats are a slightly newer design with headrests.

Personally I love to fly Iberia, espeically on the A340-600 so you should enjoy your flight.

If your flying in BusinessPlus then your in for a treat!

The oldest A343 in Iberia's fleet was built in 1996 while the newest was built in 2002. I wouldn't call that "old".

I just know that i flew the 340-300 back in november 2004 on MAD-SJO-PTY and I didn't like it too much.. but that's because of IB's configuration and service style. It does take forever to get into the air though!

The oldest A343 in Iberia's fleet was built in 1996 while the newest was built in 2002. I wouldn't call that "old".

I thiougt they started to be introduced in 1994 as a DC-10 replacement

Yes and no.

The A343 was indeed the aircraft chosen by Iberia to replace thier DC10-30s.

However, the first A340-300 arrived in april/may 1996. It was EC-GGS "Concha Espina".

The newest A343 in the fleet is EC-IIH "María Bárbara de Braganza", which arrived in late 2002. This aircraft is now being operated by Audeli on IB's routes to HAV and TFN.

true, as for me both the -300 and the -600 of Iberia are in a bad shape, including the crews!

As usual with the IB threads...the usual trolls are around to piss people off. Neither the 300's or 600's are in bad shape. All the 300's have brand new interiors and the 600's are new to begin with...so I dont know what you are talking about.

Of all the IB A343s only EC-IIH and EC-IDF never go to Central or South America. They fly only to HAV and TFN.

So which are those "special" ones? and what makes them "special"?

All the 343 go to all 343 destinations and not always HAV and TFN are served by the same aircraft. For example, EC-IIH is flying today MAD-JFK-MAD-TFN-MAD.

The -300 are old compared to these brand new -600 but are obviously in excellent shape.

DC-9s here in Venezuela are more comfy and better looking than those ugly, dirty and uncomfy A343s...

Even if the DC-9 is a great plane you can't compare it with a A343 or A346 (even if there are dirty and uncomfy like IB ones!  bigthumbsup  ).
These threads to bash Iberia are starting to be repetitive and annoying...
